Bayern Munich started the Harry Kane talks hoping to trim his wages. They are ending them paying him the same.

The 33-year-old has reached an in-principle agreement on a two-year extension that runs to 2029, according to Goal, with his gross salary holding at roughly €25 million per year, the rate he has been on since arriving in 2023.

That is a quiet but telling result. Bayern has long preferred not to tie top-end money to a player over 30 on a multi-year commitment, and the earlier stages of the talks had the club pushing to reduce the figure.

Hainer backs Kane for the Ballon d’Or

The leverage is simple. Kane has 152 goals in 154 appearances for Bayern since 2023, and he reached 100 Bundesliga goals in 98 games, the fastest anyone has ever done it in the competition. A record that had stood for nearly 50 years went in September.

He is the frontrunner for the 2026 Ballon d’Or, and president Herbert Hainer has made it clear who the club would pick between Kane and winger Michael Olise.

“I’d give it to Harry Kane!” Hainer told reporters.

A striker scoring at that rate, this close to the biggest individual prize in football, does not take a pay cut.

Kane wants a Premier League escape

The piece of the deal still being drafted is the release clause. Kane’s original 2023 contract carried a declining escape value, around €80 million in the first year and €65 million in the second, and he passed on both windows.

His side wants a similar mechanism built into the new agreement, giving him a route back to the Premier League if he ever wants one. Bayern, per Bild journalist Christian Falk, is relaxed about putting one in.

“Bayern Munich are not afraid of this clause, because they’ve dealt with it before and Kane never ended up triggering it,” Falk said.

Spurs get the first look

One detail further down the terms sheet concerns Tottenham Hotspur, Kane’s former club. Spurs are set to receive a so-called matching right. If Kane ever activates a release clause and another Premier League side bids, Tottenham would get the chance to match the offer.

Earlier in the process Kane kept his own public line short.

“The first meeting was this week. But these matters aren’t decided in one or two weeks,” he told reporters in September.

“Talks have been positive. So far, so good.”

A signing date has not been set. The release clause and the performance-related terms are the last pieces to be clarified before Kane puts pen to paper on a deal that would take him to 36.
