Bernardo Silva has ‘vanished’ from Real Madrid’s line-up: “He has to improve”

Bernardo Silva was named on the bench again when Real Madrid faced Villarreal at the Santiago Bernabéu on Saturday, 10 October. For a player who signed in June as the headline name of José Mourinho’s rebuild, the role is a long way from what the club sold.

The numbers are small and the picture is clear. Silva has accumulated just 282 minutes across Real Madrid’s first eight matches of the 2026-27 season, with only a handful of those minutes coming since 12 September.

Mourinho’s fitness verdict

The first warning came in August, when Mourinho was asked about Silva’s state after a pre-season friendly in Budapest. His answer to ESPN was unusually direct for a public assessment of a marquee signing.

“Bernardo is a really important player for us, but the poor guy is another one who benefits from not doing anything when they’re on holiday.”

“It does him good [mentally] during his time off to not do anything, so he’s come back in a poor physical shape, he has to improve.”

Mourinho then explained he had moved Silva from his natural deeper role to a No. 10 position during the game because the 32-year-old was “lacking a little physical strength”.

Valverde and Tchouaméni ahead of him

The tactical consequence has been straightforward. Federico Valverde and Aurélien Tchouaméni have emerged as Mourinho’s preferred central pairing, a more physical, more mobile combination than Silva offers. Arda Güler’s strong early-season form has further closed the door on an advanced role, and Real Madrid have no shortage of options behind the striker.

Silva started Mourinho’s first two league fixtures of the season but his involvement has steadily thinned. By the time Real Madrid lost 2-1 at Atlético Madrid on 20 September, he was restricted to a brief appearance from the bench.

Few minutes with Portugal either

The international break offered no relief. Portugal boss Jorge Jesus, appointed after the Seleção’s exit from the 2026 World Cup, named Silva in his Nations League squad but gave him only a handful of minutes off the bench across the September and October windows. Portugal beat Wales 1-0 on 24 September and Denmark 4-2 on 1 October without him making an impression.

Silva arrived at the Bernabéu in June on a two-year contract after nine seasons at Manchester City. Real Madrid confirmed the signing on 17 June, with Mourinho identified publicly as the driving force behind the pursuit.

Real Madrid host Sevilla at the Bernabéu on Sunday, 18 October. Mourinho’s team-sheet will be the next public read on where Silva stands.
