Coventry’s teenage substitute Stephen Mfuni, their youngest ever Premier League goalscorer, rolled in the fourth in the 86th minute at the Coventry Building Society Arena on Monday evening. By then any argument about the scoreline was over. Frank Lampard’s side had taken Newcastle apart.
Jack Rudoni converted a sixth-minute penalty, Sidiki Chérif added a second three minutes into the second half, and Ellis Simms finished with his first touch after coming on. Sven Botman had briefly dragged Newcastle back to 2-1 in the 70th minute.
The result was the first Premier League home victory of the season for a Coventry side that only returned to the top flight this summer, and it moved them clear of the relegation zone.
