The 41-year-old faces a ban of between one and six months. His own public admission of fault, however, could open the door to a far shorter sanction than the headline range suggests.

Portugal’s football federation announced on Saturday 10 October that disciplinary proceedings had been initiated against Cristiano Ronaldo, with the case referred to the federation’s disciplinary investigation committee. Its findings will remain confidential until the investigation concludes.

Under federation regulations, a player who “abandons or fails to appear” at national team duty without justification faces a suspension of between one and six months, plus a fine.

Proença’s quiet rescue mission

At the same time, federation president Pedro Proença is working to engineer a reconciliation before the suspension hardens into a permanent split.

Proença, a former referee, plans to bring Ronaldo and head coach Jorge Jesus into the same room with other federation officials to reopen dialogue and lower the temperature. He has publicly backed Jesus while making clear he does not want the captain’s international career to end this way.

The timing matters. Portugal play Denmark on 14 November and Wales on 17 November in the final two Nations League group fixtures. A ban in the one-month range would push the captain beyond both.

A halving under Article 244

Ronaldo has, pointedly, not fought the suspension. In a social media statement, he acknowledged he had been wrong to leave the camp.

“I have already apologised, but I know that actions must have consequences. Anyone in the world of football, just like me, knows that, regardless of one’s status, the rules are the same for everyone.”

Portuguese lawyer Gonçalo Almeida has pointed to Article 244 of the FPF’s disciplinary regulations, which allows both the minimum and maximum sanction to be cut in half when mitigating factors apply.

“The sanctions will be reduced by half, and in the best-case scenario for the national team captain, the minimum sanction of one month and 510 euros would become a suspension of 15 days and a fine of 255 euros,” Almeida said.

Ronaldo’s more than 20 years in the national shirt and a clean recent disciplinary record are both in the mitigation column.

The Norway bench that started it

The row traces back to late September, when Jesus left Ronaldo on the bench for Portugal’s 2-1 Nations League win in Norway. Ronaldo had reportedly been promised minutes in Oslo and, having not received them, left the squad before the next fixture.

Jesus kept winning without him. Portugal took maximum points across the window and Gonçalo Ramos scored three goals, a run that leaves the coach with little pressure to grant concessions.

The federation has not announced a date for the final ruling.
