Harry Kane has 36 Champions League goals scored since turning 30, one more than Lionel Messi managed at the same age. The England captain reached the mark on Tuesday with a penalty and a back-post header in Stavanger, where Bayern Munich let a 3-2 lead slip and drew 3-3 against Viking FK.

Kane needed just 40 Champions League matches after his 30th birthday to pass Messi’s 35, which the Argentine set across 48 appearances. He has now scored in nine consecutive Champions League appearances, equalling a streak previously reached by Ruud van Nistelrooy, Robert Lewandowski and Cristiano Ronaldo. Ronaldo’s record of 11 straight is still out of reach.

A two-goal lead thrown away

Viking stunned the German champions inside 71 seconds, Gianni Stensness heading in from a corner. Peter Christiansen made it 2-0 in the 38th minute with a cool finish on the counter.

Kane dragged Bayern back into it, converting a 54th-minute penalty and heading home six minutes later. Luis Díaz turned the match in the 71st, finishing off a move Kane had set up.

Then came the collapse. Michael Olise picked up two yellow cards in the space of a minute, the second for throwing the ball at an opponent, and Vincent Kompany’s side were down to ten. Herman Haugen, meeting a cross from Viking captain Zlatko Tripić, headed in the equaliser in the 90th.

Kane was named man of the match. Bayern have four points from two Champions League league phase games.

Kane the bookmakers’ favourite with 12 days to London

Kane sits on the 30-man Ballon d’Or shortlist alongside Kylian Mbappé, Lamine Yamal, Erling Haaland, Rodri and reigning winner Ousmane Dembélé.

He has been installed as the bookmakers’ favourite after a 2025-26 season that produced 73 goals for club and country, a Bundesliga title with Bayern and a third-place finish for England at the World Cup.
