The Real Madrid number 10 reached the mark more than three months earlier in life than Messi, who had been the youngest player to 100 Champions League games at 28 years and 84 days since September 2015. Mbappé’s version came at the Stadio Olimpico, Roma’s home ground, against the same opponent Messi faced.
Roma are the opposition in both chapters. Messi’s own 100th game was played in Rome; Mbappé’s was played in Rome. The symmetry had been the headline angle going into kick-off: the France international walking onto the same patch of grass where Messi had set the line, with the chance to erase it.
Messi’s night ended on the crossbar. Mbappé’s did not
Messi’s 100th appearance, on 16 September 2015, finished 1-1. Barcelona dominated possession but were pegged back by Alessandro Florenzi’s long-range strike. Messi was later denied by the crossbar and left the pitch without a goal on his milestone night.
Mbappé’s version played out differently. Real Madrid won 1-0 in Rome, with Mbappé on the scoresheet. His Champions League tally now stands at 72 goals in 100 appearances, taking him clear of Raúl into fifth on the competition’s all-time scorers list, behind only Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Robert Lewandowski and Karim Benzema. He had entered the match level with the former Real Madrid captain on 71 goals, having scored in 49 of his previous 99 games at a rate of 0.71 per match.

That rate, over the length of a hundred-match career, puts him in a bracket occupied only by Messi, Ronaldo and Lewandowski. The hundred games have carried him from a 13-minute substitute appearance for Monaco in the 2016-17 season to last season’s top scorer title with 15 goals.
Twelve days to the Ballon d’Or vote in London
The milestone lands in a sensitive stretch of the calendar. The 2026 Ballon d’Or will be presented at the London Palladium on 26 October, the first time France Football’s award has moved out of Paris in its 70-year history. The venue was chosen in part to honour the award’s first winner in 1956, the England international Stanley Matthews.
Mbappé is one of the 30 nominees on the shortlist, alongside Harry Kane and Lamine Yamal. He has yet to lift the award. His pre-match form had drawn scrutiny; the hundredth appearance answered part of it, with a goal, a win and a record that now carries his name. The ceremony is 12 days away.
