Jamal Musiala is back with the ball at his feet. The 23-year-old attacker completed drills for changes of direction and ball work in individual training at Bayern Munich’s Säbener Straße complex this week, while his teammates traveled to Stavanger for a Champions League fixture at Viking.

That is the clearest sign of progress since he tore a thigh muscle in warm-ups for Germany’s Nations League meeting with the Netherlands on 24 September.

Freiburg first, derby next

Bayern are not committing to a return date, but internal planning points to the away match at SC Freiburg on Saturday 25 October as the first realistic window. The real prize follows six days later: the home game against Borussia Dortmund on 31 October, the first league Klassiker of the Bundesliga season.

Kompany preaches patience

Vincent Kompany has drawn on his own injury record to warn against pushing Musiala back too soon.

“I can relate to his story of setbacks. I’ve experienced that often in my own career,” the Bayern head coach said.

“That’s something Jamal has always shown. In every situation, he knows how to fight his way back.”

President Herbert Hainer said recently that Musiala had resumed running drills and would be back in a few weeks.

Last season’s warning

The caution has a short history. Musiala missed the second half of last season after breaking his left fibula in a 50-50 with Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma in the Club World Cup quarter-final on 5 July 2025, an injury that included a dislocated ankle and surgery in Munich.

He has already missed three of Bayern’s seven Bundesliga matches this season. He will also sit out the league trip to RB Leipzig on 17 October and the Champions League tie away at Arsenal on 21 October.

Freiburg away on Saturday 25 October is the first fixture that could realistically bring him back into the squad.
