Manchester United’s £50m gamble takes new twist as PSG enter the picture

Paris Saint-Germain sent scouts to Leny Yoro’s France debut this month, with the 20-year-old defender Manchester United paid more than £50m for in 2024 now reduced to a bit-part role…

Leny Yoro walked onto the pitch in Brussels on 5 October alongside Maxence Lacroix for his first senior France start, in a Nations League tie Zinedine Zidane’s side turned around to win 4-1 with four late goals. Belgium led until Désiré Doué’s 77th-minute equaliser, before Rayan Cherki and a Michael Olise double finished it off.

The France shirt was the loudest noise around Yoro this autumn. At Manchester United, the defender signed from Lille in summer 2024 for a fee reported at more than £50m, has barely played. He has had a handful of outings this season and was pushed out to right-back for the first time in his career in the 1-1 home draw against Tottenham on 10 October, standing in for the rested Diogo Dalot.

PSG have begun monitoring his situation and sent scouts to the Belgium game, TEAMtalk reports, with the French champions prepared to bring the defender back to his homeland if a deal opens up. Bayern Munich are tracking him as well.

INEOS do not want to lose Yoro. The club beat Real Madrid to his signature in 2024 and still see him as a long-term asset. But that stance would soften if two things lined up: Yoro’s situation at Old Trafford fails to improve, and a buyer offers enough to recoup most or all of the original fee.

Carrick under pressure

Yoro’s shrinking minutes track a wider mess at Old Trafford. United sit 13th in the Premier League with six points from six matches, and Carrick, in charge since Ruben Amorim’s sacking in January 2026, is now favourite in some betting markets to be the next manager out.

The French thread makes the story a tidy triangle: a French defender, a French club, scouts there to watch him play for France. For PSG, Luis Enrique’s back-to-back Champions League winners, Yoro ticks several boxes at once: a centre-back who can also cover right-back, a profile they rated as a teenager at Lille, and a player whose stock is rising on the international stage while falling at club level.

Next up for United

Carrick’s side travel to Elland Road to face Leeds on 18 October (14:00 BST), with Luke Shaw and Noussair Mazraoui among the absentees.
