Yann Sommer left the San Siro late on Tuesday night as the man who had just helped a Belgian side knock over his former club. By Wednesday morning he was back on Instagram with news from a very different part of his life.
Sommer wrote that his marriage to Alina Schneider was over, and had been for months before the public knew.
“After seven years of marriage, Alina and I decided earlier this year to go our separate ways,” Sommer told his followers, as reported by Swiss public broadcaster SRF.
He said the decision had been made jointly after careful consideration, and that the couple’s two daughters remained their “top priority.”

He also made clear he would not be taking further questions about the split.
A couple who stayed out of the headlines
Sommer and Schneider, a lawyer from Cologne, met in 2016 during his years at Borussia Mönchengladbach and married in 2019. They have two daughters.
The pair had kept a low public profile throughout their relationship. Their last joint public appearance was at the Ballon d’Or gala in September 2025, SRF reports. By the goalkeeper’s own account the separation itself had been agreed on earlier this year. This week was simply when he chose to make it public.
Nine saves on his return to Milan
Hours earlier Sommer had been in the middle of one of the biggest nights in Club Brugge’s recent European history: a 4-3 win at Inter Milan in the Champions League league phase, on his first return to the stadium where he had played for Inter before leaving in the summer.

Nicolò Tresoldi scored a hat-trick for the visitors, including a penalty in the 30th minute and further strikes in the 63rd and 74th, before Romeo Vermant made it 4-2 with three minutes left. Lautaro Martínez pulled Inter level before half-time and struck again in the 81st, and Ange-Yoan Bonny added a third deep in stoppage time, but it was not enough.
Behind the Brugge goal, Sommer made nine saves, according to the ESPN match report, on a night when Inter created a long list of openings.
