Bayern Munich keep talking publicly about keeping Michael Olise long-term, but the formal extension talks have not actually begun.

Sporting director Max Eberl used an interview this month to insist Bayern want the winger well past his current 2029 contract. In the same breath, he conceded the negotiations have not even started.

“To be honest, there have not been any talks at all yet. What is being discussed around us has not actually materialised,” Eberl told DAZN, in comments relayed by Yahoo Sports.

“Our desire is clearly on the table. We would like to continue working with Michael for a long time, beyond 2029, ideally by extending his contract.”

Eberl added that the situation is not entirely in Bayern’s hands.

“That’s our wish, but there is a third party involved as well.”

The release clause stalemate

The commercial outline is not the problem. Bayern are reportedly ready to roughly double Olise’s wages, from around €15m to about €25m a year, with the extension running two years beyond his current deal.

The sticking point sits elsewhere. Olise’s current contract runs to 30 June 2029 and does not contain a release clause, and his camp reportedly wants one written into any new agreement, a provision Bayern have historically refused on principle.

Real Madrid stays Olise’s preferred destination

Olise’s own preference, according to Bild’s Christian Falk, is Spain over a return to England, with Real Madrid the destination he favours if he does leave Bayern.

He is not short of alternatives. FCB Inside reported on 18 October that Arsenal and Barcelona have now joined Real Madrid in watching the file. Arsenal, who did not sign a wide forward in the summer, are tracking the extension talks closely; Barcelona are monitoring the situation in case a realistic opening appears.

Eberl set his own deadline in September, telling Sport Bild he wanted certainty on the extension question by next summer.
