The Warriors’ injury scare lasted about 18 hours.

Stephen Curry limped off the Chase Center floor during Sunday’s open practice after rolling his right ankle on a move from the right wing. By Monday morning the diagnosis was a right-ankle sprain, Curry was back on the practice floor as a full participant, and head coach Steve Kerr confirmed he will start Wednesday’s season opener against the Los Angeles Lakers at Crypto.com Arena.

A non-contact slip on the right wing

The move that triggered the concern was innocuous. Curry had the ball on the right wing, made a move off the dribble, and his right foot stuck as his sneaker squeaked on the floor. He stopped play, banged the ball on the floor and limped to the locker room without returning.

The context made the moment look worse than it turned out to be: Curry spent the summer reworking his routine around a persistent right-knee problem that cost him 27 games last season.

Kerr went looking for him in the training room as soon as practice ended.

“He’s fine,” Kerr told reporters.

Asked whether his heart had skipped a beat watching the 38-year-old limp away three days from the opener, Kerr did not pretend otherwise.

“Always, always,” he said.

Porzingis will not travel to Los Angeles

The ankle is the smallest of Golden State’s medical concerns heading into Wednesday. Jimmy Butler and Moses Moody are both still rehabbing knee injuries from last season and are not close to returning, and Kristaps Porzingis will not travel with the team as he deals with an undisclosed health matter. Brandin Podziemski missed Monday’s practice with lower-back tightness and is questionable for the opener.

Curry is scheduled to practice again on Tuesday before the team flies south. The 2026-27 campaign tips off on Wednesday night at Crypto.com Arena against the Lakers.
