Harry Kane looked straight at the camera on Wednesday night and let Thierry Henry know the message had landed.
“I was watching a few weeks ago, don’t worry,” Kane said on CBS Sports after Bayern Munich’s 2-2 Champions League draw with Arsenal at the Allianz Arena.
The timing is awkward. Henry co-hosts the 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony with Kate Scott at the London Palladium Theatre on Monday 26 October. If Kane walks away with the trophy, Henry is the man who presents it.
Henry picked Mbappé, with Olise ahead of Kane
Weeks before the ceremony, the Arsenal legend went on air with his pick for the men’s award.

“It’s Kylian Mbappé,” Henry said. “When you see what he has achieved individually…”
Then came the line that stung Kane. “The best player in Germany last year was Michael Olise,” Henry told ESPN FC, pointing to the Bayern winger’s 15 goals and 21 assists against Kane’s 36 Bundesliga goals.
Kane finished the 2025-26 season with 73 goals for club and country, won the Bundesliga title with Bayern and added seven goals in seven games at the World Cup. He heads into Monday as one of the leading candidates on the nominees list.
Kane leaves the CBS panel laughing
Kane’s one-liner left co-analysts Micah Richards and Jamie Carragher scrambling for a response on air. He delivered it as a dry aside, the kind of comeback that only works because everyone in the studio knew exactly which Henry clip he meant.

The Bayern striker had already made his case at the Allianz earlier in the evening. He slipped a sublime assist to Alphonso Davies to cancel out Eberechi Eze’s opener before converting a 61st-minute penalty for his 16th goal in 22 appearances against Arsenal. Declan Rice equalized in the 82nd minute to rescue the draw for the visitors.
No Ballon d’Or for the man handing it out
The irony of Henry hosting the ceremony cuts in another direction too. The Arsenal and France legend never won the Ballon d’Or himself. He finished second to Pavel Nedvěd in 2003 and third in 2006, behind winner Fabio Cannavaro and runner-up Gianluigi Buffon, and the award eluded him across his peak years at Highbury and Barcelona.
The 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony starts at 20:00 GMT on Monday at the London Palladium.
