Nagelsmann, 39, has been sounded out by Manchester United about taking over at Old Trafford, according to Yahoo Sports’ summary of talkSPORT reporting. The former Bayern Munich and Germany coach is described as the hierarchy’s primary candidate, and is reported to be open to a Premier League move.

He has been out of work since leaving the Germany job after a disappointing World Cup campaign earlier this year.

Carrick keeps his job for the weekend. Sky Sports reports that no formal decision has been taken about his future, and that Sunday’s Premier League match against Bournemouth is viewed inside Old Trafford as pivotal.

Seven matches, no win

The Como defeat on Wednesday 21 October was the seventh match in a row that United have failed to win. Club bosses believe the squad is stronger than the one Carrick steered to third place last season, and the gap between expectation and delivery is what has turned the heat up fastest.

Nagelsmann is not the only name in the frame. Yahoo’s summary places Eddie Howe among those favoured by sections of the board, with Antonio Conte and Brighton’s Fabian Hürzeler also linked.

Fernandes targets Carrick’s setup

The flashpoint came in the hour after full time in Como. Fernandes, speaking to TNT Sports, questioned the manager’s approach.

“It’s a decision from the staff to not press man-to-man and sometimes leave a little space in behind and try to get the ball in the first moment, to wait for them, to give them the ball. But sometimes when you give too much the ball to these teams they get confident…”

Carrick returned fire the next day.

“We half pressed man-to-man in the second half and ended up conceding a goal from that. Whatever tactics you play, if you don’t run back, you ain’t going to win.”

The club is not expected to discipline Fernandes, who retains the captaincy, with senior figures reading his outburst as frustration rather than insubordination.

Como’s 600 passes

A Sky Sports breakdown of the match sides partly with Carrick on effort. Como completed 600 passes against United, more than any opponent this season, but their goals did not come from long buildups: the longest sequence leading to a goal lasted 13 passes, and two goals came within minutes of kick-off. On ball recoveries in the attacking third, Como edged United five to four.

Kick-off against Bournemouth at Old Trafford is on Sunday, 25 October.
