Nicolas Jackson scored in the sixth minute and again on the hour at Villa Park on 24 October, sinking Manchester City 2-1 and ending Enzo Maresca’s unbeaten league start.
The second goal, teed up by summer signing Ibrahim Mbaye, squirmed under Gianluigi Donnarumma and gave City their first Premier League defeat of 2026-27. It also pushed Jackson to four goals in seven league games for Villa.
Aston Villa paid a club-record fee for him. The permanent transfer, confirmed by the club on 29 August, was £47.5m plus £17.5m in add-ons, and arrived in the same window that sent Ollie Watkins to Al Hilal for £51m.
It was his second move in little more than a year. Chelsea had already sent him to Bayern Munich on loan for 2025-26, after the Londoners signed Liam Delap and João Pedro.

The number that followed him from Chelsea
Jackson’s two Chelsea seasons produced 24 goals in 65 Premier League appearances, a return that always looked thinner on the data than it did in the table. According to The Analyst, only two players across Europe’s top five leagues underperformed their non-penalty expected goals by more than Jackson’s -7.0 across that period.
He was presented with 61 big chances at Chelsea and converted 29.5 per cent of them, the tenth-worst rate among forwards shown 30 or more. The finishing, not the service, was the recurring note.
What Emery is using him for
Villa are not asking Jackson to be a poacher. The Analyst’s tracking has him top among nominal centre-forwards in the Premier League for distance progressed via carries, 476.7 metres across 55 ball carries this season, and top for progressive carries of ten metres or more.
His 81 off-ball sprints and 75 runs into the final third are among the leading figures at his position, and 26 of those runs have ended with a shot, the second-highest total of any centre-forward in the division. Three have ended with goals.

The underlying numbers have moved with him rather than against him. A non-penalty xG of 1.98 across his first league appearances has produced four goals, generated largely in transition, where the running breaks defensive lines before anyone has to finish from a congested box.
The manager who gave him his debut
Unai Emery handed Jackson his La Liga minutes at Villarreal before leaving the Spanish club in October 2022, and the reunion at Villa was not an accident.
At the Ballon d’Or ceremony on 26 October, Emery told reporters that “Aston Villa is where I am feeling now so, so comfortable”, batting away interest from Manchester United. He is contracted at Villa until 2029.
Villa sit ninth with 11 points from eight league games and travel to Old Trafford on 8 November.
