Nine matches have brought Sunderland one league win, and Saturday’s 3-1 defeat at a side that started the day inside the drop zone has turned mounting pressure on Le Bris into something harder to answer.

Lampard’s team led by two inside 40 minutes at the Coventry Building Society Arena. Tatsuhiro Sakamoto drove in his first Premier League goal from the edge of the box in the 17th minute, and Taiwo Awoniyi doubled the lead in the 36th after dispossessing Luke O’Nien on the edge of the Sunderland area. Jack Rudoni added a third in the 52nd minute, his effort from range taking a decisive deflection off Omar Alderete past goalkeeper Robin Roefs.

Enzo Le Fée pulled one back from the spot on 67 after Ethan Pinnock handled in the box, but Sunderland did little with the lifeline. Alderete was then dismissed deep in stoppage time for a second yellow card.

Lampard rewarded for pushing on

The win was Coventry’s third of the Premier League season and lifted them above Manchester United and out of the bottom three.

“The performance was really good. I thought we started the game well and continued to get our rewards,” Lampard told Sky Sports after the final whistle.

Awoniyi’s goal was his first in the Premier League since joining Coventry in the summer, and his finish barely 20 minutes after Sakamoto’s opener gave Lampard’s side the margin they needed to see out a second half in which Sunderland offered little beyond the penalty.

Le Bris running out of ground

Le Bris guided Sunderland to a seventh-place finish on their return to the top flight and into European football. One win from the first nine matches of 2026-27 has unwound that goodwill in short order, and Le Fée’s penalty was Sunderland’s first Premier League goal since 20 September.

“Consistency is the key word in this league. We gave two opportunities from unforced errors and it changed the game,” the French coach told Sky Sports.

Six of Sunderland’s league goals conceded this season have come from individual defensive errors, according to a Yahoo Sports analysis that singled out Le Bris for making no changes at half-time with his side already two down.

Coventry’s win leapfrogged Manchester United, leaving United one point and one place outside the relegation zone. Alderete’s late red card leaves Sunderland without the defender for their next league fixture.
