Hansi Flick has made his pick from his old league. The Barcelona head coach has identified Finn Jeltsch, the 20-year-old VfB Stuttgart centre-back, as the defender he wants above every other option in Europe, with the club now actively preparing a push for the Germany international.
Jeltsch is not just a Flick obsession. Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Arsenal, Juventus, Manchester United and Liverpool have all tracked him in recent months. Reports in England have Liverpool ready to go to around €50m in search of a long-term Virgil van Dijk successor, while Stuttgart is understood to be holding out for closer to €60m.
Summer, not January
A January deal is almost certainly off the table. Italian transfer journalist Gianluca Di Marzio has told Yahoo Sports that Barcelona’s summer outlay has left no room in the budget for a mid-season signing of this size.
“Barcelona is very interested in him, but has already spent a lot of money in the summer, so the club cannot pay transfer fees for new players in January,” Di Marzio told Yahoo Sports.

A summer transfer is the likely path, matching the timeline Barcelona’s staff appear comfortable with. Flick, who extended his Barcelona contract to 2028 earlier this year, has the time to wait.
Klopp was the first to flag him
Jeltsch’s name travelled outside Germany in part because of a coach who used to work in Spain’s rival league. Jürgen Klopp, appointed Germany head coach in August after Julian Nagelsmann’s departure in the wake of the 2026 World Cup, picked out the defender at his first squad announcement press conference.
“Of the players I wasn’t immediately familiar with, Finn was the first who caught my eye,” Klopp said, according to Goal.
Jeltsch did not make Klopp’s first squad, but he has since been handed his senior Germany call-up, and the Bundesliga scouting departments in Munich, London and Madrid have all intensified their monitoring.

Why Stuttgart hold the cards
Jeltsch joined Stuttgart from 1. FC Nuremberg in early 2025 for a reported €9.5m, and his current deal runs until 2030. That contract length, more than any particular rejection, is what underpins the asking price.
The club is not under pressure to sell in winter, and any summer bidder will have to clear a fee shaped by the four years still left on the deal. Flick’s task is to convince both the dressing room and Jeltsch himself that Barcelona, with Pau Cubarsí already installed as the long-term centre-back, is the right landing spot before Real Madrid, Bayern or the Premier League trio push harder.
Jeltsch’s current market valuation, as reported across the recent coverage, sits in the €50-60m range, with Stuttgart’s starting position at the top of that band.
