Romeo Lavia had barely strung together a full competitive 90 minutes in a Chelsea shirt across his two and a bit years at the club. Inside four days, he has now done it twice.
The 22-year-old played the entire Carabao Cup tie away at Liverpool last week and started again on Saturday as Chelsea beat Manchester United 2-0 at Stamford Bridge. He set up Morgan Rogers’ opener, led the pitch for tackles and recoveries and won seven of his nine duels, according to post-match analysis of his numbers.
For Alonso, the physical evidence has started to matter as much as the ball-winning.
“We know Rom is feeling better, is feeling stronger, is feeling more confident to go with more minutes and with more load,” Alonso told Chelsea’s website after the United game.

“He’s gone from playing the whole game at Anfield to not even 72 hours later playing that way and with that energy. Sometimes the head is more important than the legs and now his head is in a good place.”
‘Very complete’ midfield display
Alonso took over at Stamford Bridge in July 2026, four months before he could point to a Lavia performance like this one. The Belgian had managed only 43 Premier League appearances across his first two seasons at Chelsea.
The Spaniard framed Saturday as the culmination of a recent run, not a flash in the pan. He described it as a top performance and said he had seen the midfielder in top form for three weeks, calling the display very complete from a midfielder’s point of view.
Two seasons lost to muscle problems
Chelsea paid up to £58m to sign Lavia from Southampton in August 2023, and he was then ruled out until late December with an ankle problem. A thigh injury limited him to a single appearance in the 2023-24 season, with a 185-day absence that cost him the rest of the campaign.

The 2024-25 season brought four more spells on the sidelines, mostly thigh-related, and 33 missed games across all competitions, Flashscore’s injury record shows.
Chelsea back in Champions League places
Saturday’s result pushed Chelsea back into the Premier League’s top four after setbacks against Tottenham and Liverpool. Rogers finished off a counter five minutes into the second half, Cole Palmer added a penalty, and 10-man United slipped to a ninth game without a win, with Michael Carrick now hosting Roma at Old Trafford in the Champions League on Tuesday.
Lavia’s next assignment is a trip to Sunderland on Sunday, 8 November, Chelsea’s final fixture before the international break.
