Dayot Upamecano did not score at the Metropolitano on Tuesday. He did almost everything else.
Bayern Munich beat Atletico Madrid 2-0 in the Spanish capital, their first-ever win there against the club, and afterwards Max Eberl could not help revisiting a piece of business from nine months earlier.
“Thank God we extended [Dayot’s] contract. Thank God he’s at our club. He’s been performing at a world-class level for weeks now,” Eberl said in comments carried by Yahoo Sports.
The sporting director pointed to form stretching back through the end of last season and the World Cup, with Upamecano, 28, now also chipping in with goals.

A February deal after months of brinkmanship
The deal Eberl was praising did not come easily. After protracted negotiations with Upamecano’s camp, during which Bayern briefly withdrew their offer, the club announced the four-year extension on 13 February 2026, tying the defender down until 2030.
In the official announcement, the Frenchman said he wanted to keep clean sheets and win as many titles as possible with Bayern.
Bischof’s six tackles alongside Kimmich
Vincent Kompany’s side had every reason to feel stretched on Tuesday. The head coach himself was absent from the touchline, as were several first-team regulars. Yet the midfield pivot of Tom Bischof and Joshua Kimmich smothered Atletico before Lennart Karl and Konrad Laimer struck in the second half.
Bischof, 21 and making his third consecutive Champions League start, finished with six successful tackles, more than any other player has recorded in a Champions League match this season, according to WhoScored data cited by Goal.

Upamecano hits the crossbar
Upamecano himself twice came close to adding his name to the scoresheet. In the 73rd minute, his deflected shot from just outside the box looped over Jan Oblak and came back off the crossbar, per the live commentary. Nine minutes later he headed the ball over the line after outmuscling his marker, only for the referee to rule the goal out for a foul in the build-up.
Karl’s opener on 54 minutes followed a Robin Le Normand mistake, the youngster chipping Oblak for only his second career Champions League goal. Laimer sealed the win on 74 minutes, rifling a Harry Kane cross-field pass into the roof of the net.
Upamecano has three goals in 12 appearances this season.
