Zidane’s dream Premier League XI revealed: legends in every position
Though Zinedine Zidane never played in the Premier League, his admiration for the English top flight is no secret. Back in 2016, the French legend named his all-time Premier League XI—a powerhouse team filled with icons who left a lasting mark on the league. Here’s how Zidane’s dream team lines up, with every player and position included.
Goalkeeper – Peter Schmeichel

In goal, Zidane went with the commanding presence of Peter Schmeichel. The Danish shot-stopper was a cornerstone of Manchester United’s dominance in the 1990s, famously helping them win the treble in 1999. His 128 Premier League clean sheets and leadership made him an obvious choice.
Right-back – Gary Neville

At right-back, Zidane selected Gary Neville, a one-club man who became a defensive mainstay for Manchester United. Known for his consistency and fierce loyalty, Neville played nearly 400 league matches and was part of multiple title-winning sides under Sir Alex Ferguson.
Centre-back – Rio Ferdinand

Zidane picked Rio Ferdinand as one of his central defenders, praising the Englishman’s composure and class. Ferdinand was a modern ball-playing centre-back before it became the norm and formed one of the league’s most iconic partnerships during his time at Old Trafford.

Centre-back – Jaap Stam

Alongside Ferdinand is Jaap Stam, the no-nonsense Dutch defender who played a key role in United’s treble-winning campaign. Zidane had first-hand experience facing Stam in the Champions League and clearly respected his power, intelligence, and presence at the back.
Left-back – Ashley Cole

The only non-Manchester United player in Zidane’s defence is Ashley Cole. Widely regarded as the best left-back in Premier League history, Cole’s defensive sharpness and ability to join the attack made him a standout at both Arsenal and Chelsea.
Central midfield – Steven Gerrard

In midfield, Zidane started with Steven Gerrard, Liverpool’s talisman and heartbeat for over a decade. Although he never won the Premier League, Gerrard’s dynamic range, leadership, and knack for big moments earned him a spot in Zidane’s elite XI.
Defensive midfield – Claude Makelele

Zidane’s compatriot Claude Makelele earned his place as the midfield anchor. Revered for his discipline and positional awareness, Makelele’s influence was so profound that the holding midfield role is often referred to by his name.

Central midfield – Patrick Vieira

Another French legend in Zidane’s team is Patrick Vieira, the engine of Arsenal’s Invincibles. Physical, technical, and a natural leader, Vieira dominated midfield battles and brought a winning mentality wherever he played.
Central midfield – Paul Scholes

Zidane’s midfield wouldn’t be complete without Paul Scholes, a player he often called the best of his era. Scholes’ passing range, intelligence, and ability to control the tempo made him a standout throughout Manchester United’s golden years.
Forward – Thierry Henry

Leading the line is Thierry Henry, a player Zidane knew well both on and off the pitch. The Arsenal icon dazzled Premier League fans with his pace, finesse, and finishing, becoming one of the most complete forwards the league has ever seen.
Forward – Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo rounds out Zidane’s XI after his game-changing spell at Manchester United. Winning his first Ballon d’Or in 2008, Ronaldo’s goalscoring and athleticism helped redefine what a Premier League forward could be. He would later become one of Zidane’s most trusted stars at Real Madrid.
