Paqueta speaks out on spot-fixing saga
The Football Association (FA) launched its inquiry in August 2023, alleging that Paqueta intentionally received yellow cards in four Premier League games — a charge that, if proven, could have ended his career with a lifetime ban.
An independent commission later cleared him of all spot-fixing accusations in July, finding no evidence of deliberate wrongdoing. While Paqueta breached minor procedural rules during the process, he faced no financial or sporting penalties.
The investigation also derailed what would have been a major transfer to Manchester City, a move he had been close to finalising before receiving the FA’s letter. “Professionally, I lost that opportunity — a leap in my career,” Paqueta said.
Family, fear, and perseverance
In an interview with Brazil’s Globo, cited by the Daily Mail, Paqueta reflected on the toll the saga took on his mental health and family life.

“Without a doubt, it was a very difficult time, not only for me but for my family. My wife and I went through two long, painful years, but with a happy ending,” he said.
He added that the experience strengthened his family’s bond and prompted him to seek psychological support. “It was difficult for me; I had psychological support to deal with all of this,” Paqueta explained. “Now it’s about enjoying this moment — being able to play a little lighter again, without this weight, without this fear, and being happy on the field.”
Those close to him say his mood has noticeably lifted since the verdict. “I feel free again,” he told Globo.
A career almost changed
Paqueta also revealed how close he came to joining Manchester City in 2023, only for the allegations to halt negotiations abruptly.

“Everyone knows that I really had a transfer to City. I probably would have signed the week I received the letter (from the FA),” he said. “Psychologically, that’s where I was most affected — the fear, the uncertainty of my future.”
He added that the federation’s handling of the case deepened that anxiety: “Due to the circumstances of the investigation and the way the federation managed everything, it generated fear in us.”
Back to form at West Ham
Now cleared and refocused, Paqueta has rediscovered his rhythm in East London. Under manager Julen Lopetegui, the 28-year-old has scored four goals in 12 appearances this season, helping West Ham secure back-to-back league wins — including a 3–1 victory over Newcastle United earlier this month.
Supporters and analysts alike note that his renewed confidence has been evident on the pitch, with Paqueta once again displaying the creativity that made him one of the Premier League’s most sought-after midfielders.

“I just want to enjoy football again,” he said. “To play without fear and be happy doing what I love.”
Paqueta remains under contract with West Ham until 2027 and says he is determined to repay the club’s faith in him after what he calls “the toughest period” of his career.
