Klopp links grow as Slot faces strain at Liverpool
Wednesday’s 4–1 defeat to PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League added to a sequence that several UK outlets have described as one of Liverpool’s worst in more than seventy years.
The contrast has been stark. The team opened their title defence with five straight league wins and seven victories across all competitions after the Community Shield. Since then, a sharp downturn has left the squad short on confidence and struggling to regain any rhythm.
Slot told reporters on Thursday that he intends to “fight on,” but the tension around the club is clear. Recent Premier League results have tightened the table both above and below Liverpool, and supporters are still trying to make sense of how quickly the season lost its shape.
The Klopp discussion refuses to fade
Much of the current debate centers on Jurgen Klopp, whose influence and legacy remain powerful at Anfield. According to reporting from the German outlet BILD, bookmakers now view Klopp as the leading candidate should Liverpool eventually seek a change. During his previous tenure he delivered the Champions League title in 2019 and the club’s first league championship in thirty years the following season.

German journalist Marcel Reif, speaking in BILD coverage, argued that Liverpool appear to be in serious difficulty and suggested the club would be negligent not to explore Klopp’s willingness to return. Reif also noted that Klopp’s recent comments on the Diary of a CEO podcast have intensified the scrutiny on Slot, adding that the former manager looks noticeably refreshed since stepping down.
Liverpool leadership signals patience
Despite the noise, the club’s hierarchy is not pointing toward immediate action. The Daily Mail reported on Thursday that Liverpool continue to back Slot and are not preparing to dismiss the forty seven year old at this stage. Internally there is recognition that performances must improve soon, but no decision is considered imminent.
Further comment on Klopp’s future came from Bayern Munich honorary president Uli Hoeneß, who spoke on the OMR podcast. According to Sky Sport Germany, Hoeneß said he does not expect Klopp to remain in his new Red Bull advisory role for very long, adding that the position may not suit him in the long run.
Crucial weeks ahead
Liverpool face a demanding stretch of fixtures over the next month, and the results may determine how long the speculation remains purely hypothetical. For now, Slot maintains that his focus is on stabilizing the team, even as Klopp’s reputation and enduring popularity continue to hover over Anfield.
