Cole Palmer’s reaction when asked about playing at Old Trafford

Chelsea have played down fresh speculation surrounding Cole Palmer after reports suggested the forward could consider a return to Manchester in the coming years. Head coach Liam Rosenior addressed the claims this week, insisting the England international remains settled and fully committed to the club.

“Cole’s here, he’s very happy,” Rosenior said. “There’s nothing in it. I’ve had numerous conversations with him and he loves being at Chelsea.”

The manager added that the stories had emerged without substance during a period of heightened attention around the squad.

Reports reignite Manchester talk

The renewed discussion followed reporting by The Guardian, which said Palmer was “homesick” and could reflect on a move back north in the summer of 2026. The report added that Manchester United, rather than Manchester City, would be the most likely destination should he leave Stamford Bridge.

The Sun approached the situation from a more personal angle, claiming the 23-year-old is not “enjoying life down south” and “misses” friends from Manchester. Neither outlet suggested that any formal contact or negotiations had taken place.

Growing influence at Stamford Bridge

Since arriving from Manchester City in a deal worth a reported £40 million, Palmer has become one of Chelsea’s most influential players. He has scored 48 goals in 110 appearances across all competitions and has played a central role in the club’s recent trophy successes, including the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup.

His consistent performances have also strengthened his standing at international level, ensuring that any suggestion about his future attracts widespread attention.

Old Trafford ties resurface

Speculation around a potential move to Manchester United has been fuelled by Palmer’s own past comments about his childhood support for the club. He has previously named former United striker Wayne Rooney as his idol.

In an interview with Sky Sports, Palmer reflected on the experience of returning to Old Trafford as a visiting player.

“When I do go back to the stadium [Old Trafford] it’s good because I used to go and watch matches there,” he said. “Obviously I supported United and he was probably the best player when I was watching them.”

Club stance remains firm

Rosenior rejected the idea that those memories have any bearing on Palmer’s present situation, describing the speculation as unrealistic and unfounded.

“You can’t stop speculation,” he said, “but some of it is so far from the truth that there’s no point having the conversation.”

Chelsea maintain that their focus is on Palmer’s continued development and the team’s progress, with no indication that one of their key players is considering a move away.
