One more win could end famous United haircut protest
Manchester United’s resurgence under interim manager Michael Carrick has produced an unlikely side story one that has followed the team’s results as closely as the league table.
As United travel to West Ham in search of a fifth straight win, a supporter’s promise to avoid the barber for more than a year may finally reach its end.
A promise that took on a life of its own
Frank Ilett, a United fan originally from Oxford who now lives in Spain, pledged in October 2024 that he would not cut his hair until the club won five matches in a row. At the time, the vow was meant as a personal challenge.
More than a year later, it has become a small online talking point, fueled by United’s improving form and Ilett’s regular social media updates documenting the growing length of his hair.

Results turn the spotlight on the fan
United arrive at the London Stadium on a four-match winning streak, having beaten Manchester City, Arsenal, Fulham and Tottenham in succession. The run has come since Carrick took charge following the departure of Ruben Amorim, quickly changing the mood around the club.
As the wins mounted, attention drifted beyond the pitch and toward whether Ilett’s patience would finally be rewarded.
Carrick acknowledges the story
The United manager was asked about the fan during his pre-match press conference ahead of the West Ham fixture. In comments carried by Sky Sports, Carrick said he was aware of the situation but dismissed any suggestion it would influence his approach.
“I can say I'm aware of it, yeah. My kids have made me aware of it, if anything, but it certainly won't go into the team talk from a professional level,” Carrick said. “It does make me smile, but it won't have an impact ultimately in the end.”

Why the streak matters
Speaking to Sky Sports, Ilett said the challenge had become more meaningful because of the teams United had beaten along the way. He pointed out that the victories came against top opposition rather than during a forgiving run of fixtures.
If United do secure a fifth consecutive win, Ilett said the haircut itself would be simple. After removing the bulk that has accumulated over the past year, he plans to opt for a buzz cut, describing it as a reset rather than a statement.
Even the players have noticed
The story has also reached the dressing room. After United’s 2–0 win over Tottenham, captain Bruno Fernandes was asked about the fan’s vow and brushed it aside with a smile.
“I need to book for myself, I don’t look at other people,” Fernandes said. “I don't look if they need to go to the hair dresser or not, that is not important for me.”

According to reporting by The Sun, several United players are aware of Ilett through social media and have joked privately about helping him finally end the challenge. Win or lose at West Ham, the episode has become a small reflection of how quickly optimism has returned around the club.
