NFL star ‘set to retire’ at 27 less than a year after $42m contract
In a surprising move just months into the NFL offseason, Chicago Bears center Drew Dalman has announced his retirement at age 27, stepping away from professional football after five seasons.
According to ESPN, Dalman informed the team of his decision earlier this week. The announcement comes less than a year after he signed a reported three-year, $42 million contract extension during the 2025 offseason a deal that underscored his growing value to the Bears’ offense.
A cornerstone of Chicago’s offensive line
Dalman was a steady presence for Chicago throughout the 2025 season, starting all 17 regular-season games and anchoring an offensive line that showed significant improvement. His performance earned him high marks in league-wide metrics.
As reported by ESPN, Dalman led all interior linemen in pass block win rate and ranked fifth in run block win rate. He also posted the eighth-best overall pass protection grade among guards and centers a testament to both his technical skill and consistency.

His contributions were especially critical as the Bears, led by rookie quarterback Caleb Williams, made a return to the playoffs before falling to the Los Angeles Rams in the Divisional Round.
Retirement comes at a critical juncture
Dalman’s departure adds complexity to an already crucial offseason for the Bears. The team now faces the challenge of replacing a key starter as it prepares for free agency, which opens on March 11, and the 2026 NFL Draft, scheduled for late April.
According to ESPN, Chicago may evaluate internal options along the offensive line, explore veteran free agents, or look to the draft to find Dalman’s successor.
Adding to the urgency is the injury to lineman Ozzy Trapilo, who is recovering from a significant knee injury sustained during the team’s postseason run.

Locker room reaction
News of Dalman’s retirement quickly sparked reactions from teammates. Quarterback Caleb Williams posted a short message on social media that read: “Hulk…” followed by a crying emoji a likely nod to Dalman’s imposing presence and leadership on the field.
So far, neither Dalman nor the Bears have offered a public explanation for the decision.
Looking forward
With a promising young quarterback and playoff aspirations, the Bears now enter the offseason with unexpected work to do in the trenches. Replacing Dalman will be a top priority not just to protect Caleb Williams, but to maintain the momentum that made 2025 a turning point for the franchise.
