Mascherano debate heated after Inter Miami visits Donald Trump
Mascherano, a former Barcelona, Liverpool and Argentina national team player, currently serves as head coach of Major League Soccer club Inter Miami, a role that keeps him in the global spotlight.
Barcelona Visit To Jerusalem
In 2013, Mascherano travelled to Jerusalem as part of a Barcelona delegation during a club visit to Israel and the Palestinian territories.
During the trip, players placed notes in the Western Wall and met Israeli leaders including then-president Shimon Peres and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, according to reports covering the visit at the time.
Critics of Israeli government policies toward Palestinians said the visit formed part of broader efforts to use international cultural and sporting figures to project a positive image of the country amid the long-running Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Cancelled Argentina–Israel Friendly
Mascherano was again connected to the political sensitivities surrounding the conflict in 2018, when Argentina cancelled a planned friendly match against Israel that had been scheduled to take place in Jerusalem.
Reports at the time said the decision followed sustained pressure from Palestinian solidarity groups and campaigners who argued the match risked becoming a political symbol.
According to sources cited in those reports, Mascherano and Argentina captain Lionel Messi were among players who urged the Argentine Football Association to cancel the game.
Inter Miami’s White House Visit
Years later, Mascherano again became linked to political debate after Inter Miami’s 2026 MLS Cup victory.

As is customary for championship teams in major U.S. sports leagues, the club visited the White House where players and staff met U.S. President Donald Trump.
Mascherano later defended the appearance as part of a longstanding sporting tradition rather than a political endorsement.
"We complied with a protocol that is a tradition to come to the White House for being the championship team. It was planned a long time ago... The contact with President Trump was what was seen on TV, not much more than that. We are mature enough to understand that one thing has nothing to do with the other."
However, the visit drew mixed reactions online and among some activists because of Trump’s controversial foreign policy positions and the broader political context in the Middle East.

Mascherano later said the event did not unfold exactly as the team had expected.
"We were told the visit would simply be to congratulate us on our title and that we’d only talk about football, but that’s not how it turned out."
Sports Figures In Political Crosscurrents
The episodes highlight how prominent athletes and coaches can find themselves at the center of geopolitical debates when sporting events intersect with political leaders or sensitive international issues.
While some critics argue that participation in official visits or matches can carry political symbolism, others note that such appearances often follow established sporting protocols rather than personal political positions.
