Liverpool decision to let Salah leave early may cost millions
Liverpool are prepared to let Mohamed Salah leave a year before his contract expires, according to a report by the Liverpool Echo, after the forward confirmed he will depart at the end of the season.
Salah announced the decision on Tuesday in a video shared on social media, signaling the end of a period in which he became central to Liverpool’s modern success.
“Leaving is never easy. You gave me the best time of my life. I will always be one of you,” he said in a message directed at supporters.
The club has not formally confirmed the contract arrangement, but the Liverpool Echo reported that Liverpool are willing to waive the final year of Salah’s deal. He signed a contract extension in 2025 running through 2027, so the reported decision would allow him to leave on a free transfer in June 2026.

That approach would mean passing up a transfer fee for a player the club previously chose to keep, rejecting a reported £150 million offer from Saudi side Al-Ittihad in 2023. It also reflects a broader shift as Liverpool reshape an aging attacking core rather than extending it further.
There is still no clarity on where Salah could go next. His agent, Ramy Abbas Issa, wrote on X: “We do not know where Mohamed will play next season. This also means that no one else knows. Beware of the click-whoring attention seekers.”
Signed from Roma in 2017, Salah quickly became the focal point of Liverpool’s attack. Across the latter years of Jürgen Klopp’s tenure and into Arne Slot’s spell in charge, he delivered consistently at the highest level finishing his time at the club with 255 goals and a central role in multiple major trophies, including two league titles and a Champions League win.
His influence was especially clear in the 2024/25 title-winning season, when he produced 34 goals and 23 assists in 52 appearances and was voted PFA Players’ Player of the Year for the third time.

His numbers have dipped this season, but that has done little to change how he is viewed at Anfield. When he goes, Liverpool are not just losing a forward they are losing one of the defining players of the club’s recent era, and replacing that presence will not be straightforward.
