Liverpool weigh Alonso move as pressure builds on Slot

Liverpool may be approaching a pivotal moment off the pitch as questions grow over Arne Slot’s future following a difficult title defence.

While no decision has been announced, developments behind the scenes suggest the club is already exploring potential alternatives — with former midfielder Xabi Alonso once again entering the frame.

Slot, who led Liverpool to the Premier League title less than a year ago, is now facing scrutiny after a sharp drop in results. The team has suffered 10 league defeats this season, a level not seen since the 2015–16 campaign, raising concerns about consistency and direction.

Amid that downturn, speculation around a managerial change has intensified, particularly with Alonso frequently mentioned as a leading candidate.

According to German outlet BILD, Alonso’s agent, Inaki Ibanez, has confirmed that Liverpool have expressed concrete interest in the Spaniard. The report indicates that contact between the two parties has not only occurred but continued, with senior figures at the club — including chief executive Michael Edwards — monitoring the situation closely.

Alonso is currently without a club following a short spell at Real Madrid, as reported by BILD, which could simplify negotiations if Liverpool decide to act. His earlier success with Bayer Leverkusen is believed to have strengthened his reputation as a long-term successor to Jurgen Klopp.

However, any potential move would not be straightforward. BILD reports that Alonso would seek significant influence over recruitment and squad planning before accepting a role. That stance is said to stem from frustrations during his time in Madrid, where he reportedly felt sidelined in key decisions.

The same report suggests Alonso would not be open to taking charge before the end of the current season, instead favouring a summer appointment should a formal offer arrive.

Any managerial shift would likely form part of a broader transition at Anfield. Mohamed Salah has already confirmed he intends to leave at the end of the season, despite having time remaining on his contract — a decision that could reshape Liverpool’s attacking structure.

Taken together, the uncertainty around Slot and the expected squad changes point to a potentially significant rebuild ahead of next season, with the club’s leadership now facing a series of high-stakes decisions.
