Fabrizio Romano reveals fresh details on Cristian Romero ‘release clause’ At Tottenham
Tottenham face a pivotal summer, with uncertainty surrounding both the club’s direction and the future of key players including captain Cristian Romero.
The north London side are expected to undergo significant changes in the coming months. A new co-sporting director is set to be appointed, followed by the arrival of a permanent manager, as Spurs look to reset after another difficult Premier League season.
Struggling near the bottom of the table once again, the club could see notable movement in the squad, with senior players attracting attention from abroad.
Romero is among those at the center of that speculation. The Argentina international has long been linked with a move to Spain and has previously spoken about his desire to play in La Liga. Despite signing a contract extension last year that runs until 2029, his long-term future remains uncertain.

Interest from Spanish clubs is not new. Atletico Madrid pushed to sign the 27-year-old last summer, while Real Madrid have also been credited with monitoring his situation.
Recent reports had suggested that Romero’s contract included a €60 million release clause that would allow him to join one of Spain’s top sides. However, transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano has rejected those claims.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano said: “My information is that Cuti Romero's contract does not include any sort of release clause. There is nothing on paper guaranteed about a release clause.”
He explained that while discussions in 2025 touched on the possibility of a future move, this amounted only to a verbal understanding rather than a formal clause. According to Romano, Tottenham indicated they might consider a sale if a major Spanish club made a significant offer, but no fixed fee was ever agreed.

Romano also reported that interest in Romero is already building ahead of the summer window, with several clubs making initial enquiries.
“Cuti is fully focused on keeping Tottenham in the Premier League,” he said. “But can he leave Tottenham in the summer? Yes, it's a possibility… Several top clubs have started calling for Cuti Romero.”
With just seven matches remaining, Tottenham sit narrowly above the relegation zone adding further uncertainty to a summer that could prove decisive both for the club and for one of its most important players.
