Sandro Tonali’s future in doubt as United push forward

Manchester United are increasingly focused on signing Sandro Tonali, with internal support for the deal growing as the summer window approaches.

According to reporting by the Daily Mail, the club’s interest in the Newcastle United midfielder has strengthened significantly in recent days, placing them firmly among the frontrunners for his signature.

A key development is the stance of United captain Bruno Fernandes. The Portuguese international has indicated to club decision-makers that he would welcome Tonali’s arrival, a move that could influence how aggressively United pursue the deal.

Tonali’s profile has risen further following his recent international performance. The 25-year-old scored in Italy’s 2-0 win over Northern Ireland on Thursday, a result that kept their World Cup hopes alive and highlighted his growing influence at both club and international level.

At Newcastle, Tonali has become an increasingly important figure under Eddie Howe, particularly during periods when Bruno Guimaraes has struggled with fitness. His ability to control midfield tempo and contribute offensively has not gone unnoticed across Europe.

The Daily Mail reports that Manchester United have now moved ahead of several rival clubs, including Barcelona, Real Madrid, Arsenal and Manchester City, all of whom have been tracking the Italian midfielder.

While United are exploring multiple midfield options, Tonali is understood to be a leading candidate. Other names under consideration include Elliot Anderson and Adam Wharton, though neither appears to carry the same priority at this stage.

Newcastle, for their part, are aware of the mounting interest but have not received any indication that Tonali is pushing for a transfer. The club remain in a relatively strong negotiating position, even as external pressure builds.

Off the pitch, Tonali’s future has also been the subject of discussion from his representative. Agent Giuseppe Riso recently pointed to the upcoming World Cup as a potential turning point in the player’s career.

“That was the goal, to try to make him a star player,” Riso said.

He added that strong performances on the international stage could further increase attention from elite clubs.

“He’s the Italian footballer with one of the highest values. If he shines at the World Cup, will City or Arsenal be hot on his heels? It’s very likely.”
