‘One of the best managers’ ready to take Liverpool job if Slot is replaced

Pressure is building at Liverpool after a disappointing run of results, with questions growing over Arne Slot’s future at Anfield as the season enters a निर्णcive phase.

According to German outlet Bild, former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso would be open to a return to the club as manager this summer if a formal offer is made. The report adds that any potential move would depend on Liverpool meeting certain conditions, including a role in shaping the squad.

Liverpool’s campaign has not matched expectations. The team currently sits fifth in the Premier League, 21 points behind leaders Arsenal, following a season marked by inconsistency despite heavy financial backing.

The club invested around £415 million in new signings, including a reported £125 million deal for striker Alexander Isak. However, injuries have disrupted plans, with Isak sidelined for more than three months due to a broken leg.

Bild reports that Alonso is seen internally as a strong candidate, with Liverpool having tracked his progress closely in recent months. His previous work at Bayer Leverkusen, where he led the club to a Bundesliga title in 2024, is viewed as a key factor in that interest.

His familiarity with players such as Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong—both central to that title-winning side—could also be relevant if Liverpool look to reshape their squad.

Meanwhile, Slot remains under scrutiny. Liverpool have lost 10 league matches this season, their highest total since the 2015/16 campaign. A 2-1 defeat to Brighton before the international break extended their winless run to three Premier League games.

Upcoming fixtures could prove pivotal. Liverpool face Manchester City in the FA Cup and Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, matches that may influence how the club approaches its managerial situation.

Bild also notes that Stuttgart head coach Sebastian Hoeneß is being monitored. The 43-year-old has attracted attention for his work developing players, with Angelo Stiller, Jamie Leweling and Finn Jeltsch all progressing under his guidance.

While Alonso appears to be a leading option, any decision is likely to depend on how Liverpool’s season concludes and whether results improve in the coming weeks.
