Premier League urged to ban Arsenal stars after 10 withdraw from international duty
A fresh debate over players withdrawing from international duty has emerged after a number of Arsenal players pulled out during the latest break, drawing criticism from former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor.
The situation has raised broader questions about whether club priorities are increasingly taking precedence over international commitments, particularly at a decisive stage of the domestic season.
Speaking on talkSPORT, Agbonlahor argued that stronger measures may be needed to discourage players from withdrawing without serious cause. He suggested a rule that would directly impact club availability.
“If I was part of the Premier League and I was making a decision, I would bring in a new rule, you miss the next Premier League game available if you pull out of international duty,” he said. “I tell you something, players will stop pulling out.”

Agbonlahor also stressed the importance of representing one’s country, adding: “Playing for your country is an honour. If I'm Harry Kane, I'm speaking about this and saying, ‘Come on, guys, let's not go back to what we were doing four or five years ago where players are pulling out non-stop.’”
The comments come as Arsenal push for their first Premier League title since the 2003–04 season. Several members of Mikel Arteta’s squad returned early from international camps, reportedly to focus on fitness ahead of a crucial run of fixtures.
While Agbonlahor acknowledged the pressures facing clubs competing for major honours, he questioned the broader implications of frequent withdrawals.
“I get it, Arteta is doing everything possible to win these trophies,” he said. “But I’m just not keen on players pulling out of international duty. It’s an honour to play for your country. It doesn’t sit right with me.”

Among the Arsenal players reported to have withdrawn were William Saliba, Gabriel Magalhaes, Jurrien Timber, Eberechi Eze and Leandro Trossard, with several cases attributed to injury concerns.
Attention has also focused on Noni Madueke, who left the England camp after sustaining a knock during the 1-1 draw with Uruguay. The winger was later seen wearing a brace on his left knee, prompting concerns about a possible ligament issue.
Injury analyst @physioscout suggested the problem could sideline Madueke for several weeks if ligament damage is confirmed.
Madueke, who joined Arsenal from Chelsea last summer, has recorded seven goals and four assists in 31 appearances across all competitions this season.
