Lineker questions Tuchel’s Trent call as England omission sparks deeper debate

Why Lineker believes the decision is hard to explain

According to Goal.com and reporting by Yosua Arya, Gary Lineker has openly questioned Thomas Tuchel’s choice to leave Trent Alexander,Arnold out of England’s latest squad. The omission has quickly become one of the biggest talking points around the national team, especially because Tuchel named a wide group of players for the March international window but still did not include the Real Madrid defender.

Lineker’s view is that the decision is difficult to defend from a purely football perspective. He sees Alexander,Arnold as a player with rare technical quality, someone capable of changing matches even if he is not used from the start. That is why, in Lineker’s opinion, the continued absence of the right back suggests there may be something more behind the call than form, balance, or tactical preference.

Lineker suggests there may be a personal element

Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, Lineker made clear that he sees no obvious football reason for Alexander,Arnold to be left out. He said: “You obviously know I’m a big admirer of Trent. I think there’s something personal, because football, wise, there’s no argument. I can’t see how he can not be in that squad because he has to improve your chances, even if it’s from the bench.”

He continued by saying: “So I suspect there’s something that Tuchel does not like about Trent Alexander,Arnold, I’d just be guessing in terms of what it might be, whether it’s his attitude or he thinks he’s not brilliant defensively. There has to be something in that because it makes absolutely no sense. You’ve got players playing in his position, with all due respect, that are not in the same league as him, certainly with the ball at his feet.”

Those comments underline the heart of the debate. For Lineker, Alexander,Arnold offers a level of creativity that few defenders can match, and that kind of quality can be especially valuable in tight international matches where one moment of invention can decide the result.

Ben White's recall adds to the scrutiny

According to Goal.com’s account of the discussion, the controversy has grown further because of Ben White’s return to the England setup. White came back into the picture after replacing the injured Jarell Quansah, and his recall has only sharpened the focus on Alexander,Arnold’s absence.

Lineker argued that matches of this type often require a player capable of producing something unexpected in possession, and he believes Alexander,Arnold fits that need better than many of the alternatives. He said: “As you saw in these kind of games, you need someone with a bit of magic to unlock things, and he [Trent] will provide you that. So it doesn’t make sense to me. I don’t know whether it’s his attitude or what it is. I don’t know. But I find it quite insulting looking at the players he’s brought in.”

He then added more context around White’s situation, while still maintaining that Alexander,Arnold should not be behind him in the pecking order. Lineker said: “We talk about the Ben White situation, for example, and he’s not wanted to play for England before. Now I wouldn’t judge him on that because we don’t really know what’s happened in the camp before and his reasons for not playing. That’s all fine but I can’t see how he can still be ahead of Trent, I think that’s really insulting to a seriously top full, back. That’s my view.”

How the omission could affect Alexander,Arnold's World Cup picture

According to Goal.com, Alexander,Arnold’s absence from Tuchel’s latest squad raises fresh questions about where he stands in England’s plans ahead of the World Cup. When a player of his profile is consistently overlooked, the discussion naturally moves beyond one camp and toward the bigger picture of trust, hierarchy, and long term selection.

England are now preparing for a friendly against Japan, while attention continues to build around Tuchel’s choices before the tournament. They have been placed in Group L alongside Croatia, Ghana, and Panama, and that makes every selection decision more significant. If Alexander,Arnold remains outside the squad despite his reputation and technical ability, the debate over Tuchel’s reasoning is unlikely to fade any time soon.
