Sale Sharks sign Courtney Lawes as veteran forward eyes Premiership return

Sale Sharks have announced the signing of former England captain Courtney Lawes on a one-year contract for the 2026/27 season, bringing the experienced forward back to the Premiership after his stint in France.

The deal, confirmed in a club statement and reported by SportBible, signals both a late-career return to English rugby and a potential push back into the international frame.

Lawes, 37, has spent the past two seasons with Pro D2 side Brive following his departure from Northampton Saints, where he built the bulk of his club career. Comfortable at both lock and in the back row, he is expected to add leadership and depth to Sale’s pack.

During his international career, Lawes earned 105 caps for England across 14 years, featuring in four Rugby World Cups. He was also selected for two British and Irish Lions tours, making five Test appearances.

At Northampton, he made close to 300 appearances and captained the club to the Premiership title in 2024 — their first in ten years — before moving to France. According to SportBible, that final against Bath marked his last appearance for the club.

Speaking via Sale’s official announcement, Lawes said the opportunity to return to the Premiership was a key motivation.

“I’m really excited to be joining Sale. I’ve been out of the Prem now for a couple of years and I just want to finish my career playing at the top level,” he said.

“My body feels good and I’m still performing at a high level… I think if I retired now, I’d probably regret it.”

He added that he intends to make himself available for England selection again, though his immediate focus remains at club level.

“I’m officially un-retiring from international duty and I’d love to play for England again, but first and foremost I want to play well for Sale,” he said.

Director of rugby Alex Sanderson described Lawes as a player who fits the club both on and off the field.

“Courtney is the kind of player and person that suits this club,” Sanderson said. “He’s robust, dynamic… and has a fantastic skillset.”

The signing reflects Sale’s intent to strengthen a squad aiming to challenge for major honours, with Lawes’ experience seen as a valuable addition in what is likely to be the final phase of his career.
