Montagne and Tauzin released after overnight custody

Two Clermont Auvergne players, including a France international, were briefly held by police following a late-night altercation in the Auvergne region, though no charges have been filed.

French outlet L’Equipe reported that prop Regis Montagne and teammate Lucas Tauzin were taken into custody after a confrontation left another man injured. The incident, first reported by Le Parisien, occurred while the players were out in the city with their partners.

Both men were released the following day. Early accounts cited by L’Equipe suggest investigators are treating the case as one of self-defence, with reports indicating the players were approached and attacked by the same individual.

Authorities have not announced any further legal action, and the case remains under review.

Montagne, 25, has established himself in France’s senior setup, earning seven caps and being part of the squad that won the 2026 Six Nations Championship. He made his international debut during the 2025 tour of New Zealand and has taken on greater responsibility following the retirement of veteran prop Unai Atonio, who stepped away from the game due to a heart attack.

Tauzin, 27, previously represented France at Under-20 level and was part of Toulouse’s squad during their 2024 Champions Cup-winning campaign. While he has yet to earn a senior cap, he remains an experienced presence at club level.

Clermont Auvergne confirmed the involvement of both players and is continuing to monitor the situation. The club, currently sixth in the Top 14 standings, is preparing to return to domestic competition after a short break and will be hopeful that the matter does not disrupt their push for a playoff place.

While no disciplinary action has been announced, the episode highlights the scrutiny professional athletes can face off the field, particularly during the closing stages of a competitive season.
