Camavinga speaks out after decisive red card
Eduardo Camavinga has issued a public apology after his late red card proved a turning point in Real Madrid’s Champions League elimination against Bayern Munich, as scrutiny grows over the side’s collapse in the final minutes.
Writing on Instagram the day after the match, the 23-year-old midfielder did not attempt to deflect responsibility. “I take responsibility for my part. I want to apologise to my team and all madridistas. Thank you for your support, Hala Madrid always,” he said.
Late drama in Munich
His response followed a chaotic ending at the Allianz Arena, where Madrid’s hopes of progressing slipped away in dramatic fashion, according to UEFA match reports.
The Spanish side had been on course to force extra time, holding a narrow advantage on the night with the tie level on aggregate as the match entered its final phase. But the balance shifted abruptly after Camavinga’s dismissal.

Red card changes the match
Already on a yellow card, the French international conceded a foul and then delayed the restart by moving the ball away. Referee Slavko Vincic responded with a second booking, and after a brief moment of confusion among players, the red card was confirmed.
Reduced to ten men at a critical stage, Madrid were left exposed just as Bayern began to push forward with greater urgency.
Bayern capitalise quickly
The hosts took advantage almost immediately. A deflected effort following a run from the left brought Bayern level, before a second goal arrived deep into stoppage time—a curling finish that effectively ended the contest.
Within minutes, Madrid’s European campaign had unraveled.

Wider consequences for Madrid
The defeat brings an abrupt end to what had been viewed as the club’s clearest path to silverware this season. It has also renewed focus on Madrid’s ability to manage high-pressure situations, particularly in the closing stages of major European ties.
Camavinga’s response has been seen as a sign of accountability, and while the incident will likely follow him in the short term, he remains an important part of the squad moving forward.
Season now in the balance
Beyond the Champions League, Madrid face a difficult domestic outlook. They trail Barcelona in La Liga with limited matches remaining, leaving little margin to recover ground.
With European ambitions over, attention is expected to turn toward regrouping and planning for next season. The closing moments in Munich, however, may linger as a defining episode—one where a small decision carried significant consequences.
