F1 officials issue statement ahead of “high-level” meeting over potential 2026 rule changes
Formula 1’s governing body and senior team figures are set to meet on Monday as debate intensifies over the sport’s planned 2026 regulations, following growing unease among drivers.
Sportbible reports that the talks come during an extended break in the calendar, created by the cancellation of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix. The pause has provided an opportunity for the FIA, Formula 1 management and teams to reassess elements of the future rule set before racing resumes in Miami next month.
At the centre of the discussions are the 2026 technical regulations, particularly the next generation of power units. These are expected to place a much greater emphasis on electrical energy alongside internal combustion engines, as part of the sport’s wider push toward sustainability. However, concerns have emerged over how the changes could impact racing.
Among those to question the direction is Red Bull driver Max Verstappen. As reported by Sportbible, the four-time world champion has indicated the proposed regulations could make racing less enjoyable and has raised doubts about his long-term future in Formula 1.

The FIA said that a series of meetings has already taken place throughout April, involving drivers, team representatives, manufacturers and Formula 1 officials, following the opening rounds of the season in Australia, China and Japan.
According to the governing body, an initial meeting was held on April 15, followed by a technical discussion on April 16. Monday’s session is expected to bring together team principals and senior executives to consider whether revisions to the 2026 framework are needed.
In a statement published on April 19, FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem said there had been “constructive and collaborative” discussions with drivers ahead of the meeting.
“The drivers have provided invaluable input on adjustments they feel should be made, particularly in the areas of energy management, to ensure safe, fair and competitive racing,” he said.

He added that any agreed proposals would be submitted to the FIA’s World Motor Sport Council for approval via an electronic vote.
A separate FIA statement confirmed that a “high-level meeting” involving all key stakeholders is scheduled for April 20.
The outcome of the discussions could play a significant role in shaping the final version of the 2026 regulations, as Formula 1 seeks to balance technical innovation with competitive racing.
The season is set to resume with the Miami Grand Prix on May 3.
