Pep Guardiola points at Vincent Kompany for Manchester City
Guardiola sees Manchester City in Kompany’s future
According to Fabrizio Romano in his post on X, Pep Guardiola said he believes Manchester City will remain close to Vincent Kompany if the Belgian ever returns to English football.
Guardiola said: “Sooner or later, I have the feeling, just in case he decides in a certain moment to come back to England, I'm pretty sure Manchester will be in his heart and mind”.
He added: “Hopefully the path will cross at a certain point in his life...”.
The comments matter because Kompany is not just another former City player. He was the club captain during one of the most important periods in its modern history and remains one of the defining figures of the Abu Dhabi era. When Guardiola speaks about him in those terms, it naturally fuels talk about a possible return in some role down the line.

Kompany’s stock has risen in Munich
According to FC Bayern’s official profile page for Vincent Kompany, he has been in charge of the German club since July 1, 2024, and is under contract until June 30, 2029.
According to the official Bundesliga website, Bayern have already been crowned champions in the 2025,26 season, which adds more weight to Guardiola’s praise. Kompany’s move to Munich was initially met with some skepticism, but winning major silverware has changed the tone around his work quickly.
That does not mean a return to Manchester City is close or even under discussion. Right now, Kompany is building his own path at one of Europe’s biggest clubs. But Guardiola’s remarks show that City’s respect for him has not faded, and that his standing inside the club remains strong.
Why Guardiola’s words will keep this idea alive
Guardiola has spoken highly of Kompany before, especially when discussing his leadership, presence and importance inside the dressing room during City’s rise under his management. That history gives this latest comment more substance than a routine compliment.

For now, this is not a succession story. It is a reminder of how Kompany is still viewed at Manchester City, by Guardiola and by many around the club. As long as he keeps progressing at Bayern Munich, any future opening at the Etihad will bring his name back into the conversation.
