Barcelona targets Bastoni and Alvarez

Barcelona finds itself in a familiar position: dominant domestically but yearning for European glory. While currently nine points clear of Real Madrid in the Spanish title race, their Champions League campaign ended in the quarter-finals this year, a 3-2 aggregate loss to Atletico Madrid marred by a man sent off in both legs. This contrast between La Liga success and continental frustration is shaping an interresting summer transfer strategy, with manager Hansi Flick at the frontline

Flick's long-term vision for European glory

Flick, who intends to remain at the club for at least another two years, reportedly has a verbal agreement for a contract extension until 2028, coinciding with the planned completion of Camp Nou's renovation. The German coach is clear about his ambitions, telling Football España: "For me its a big dream. There are two things in life that I want, that we win the Champions League, and we have a fantastic team for the next years. You know how I always say, we have to make the right decision about the transfer period, don’t make stupid decisions, we must be perfect." This pursuit of perfection comes as Barcelona's financial situation shows signs of improvement. La Liga president Javier Tebas admitted the club "are on the right track" towards meeting the league's strict 1:1 financial regulation, which governs transfer spending. Barcelona treasurer Ferran Olive further clarified that the club is just €10m-12m away from their target, suggesting money will be available for transfers this summer.

Defensive reinforcement

A key area of focus for Flick and sporting director Deco is the heart of the defence. With Inigo Martinez having moved to Saudi Arabia last summer and Andreas Christensen expected to leave when his contract expires, Barcelona is short on quality, relying heavily on 19-year-old Pau Cubarsi. Bringing in a world-class, left-footed centre-back is considered imperative. Reports from Spain, including GOAL.com, indicate that Inter's Alessandro Bastoni is Barcelona's primary target. Inter, facing their own financial issues, are reportedly open to selling the 27-year-old for a fee in the region of €70 million. A player-plus-cash deal is also on the table, with Barcelona potentially offering Hector Fort, once he returns from his loan at Elche, or even Swedish winger Roony Bardghji and Hungarian goalkeeper Aron Yaakobishvili as makeweights. Bastoni, despite a controversial past that saw him become "Public Enemy No.1" in Italy for celebrating a simulation and receiving a straight red card that cost Italy a World Cup play-off spot, is reportedly close to agreeing a five-year deal with Barcelona, having already agreed to adjust his salary to fit the club's budgetary restrictions, according to Mundo Deportivo and beIN Sports.

The Julian Alvarez dilemma

On the attacking front, Barcelona is "in a position to sign a top striker this summer" and is "actively looking for it," as stated by Ferran Olive. The primary target, according to widespread reports, is Julian Alvarez. The Argentine forward, however, presents a significant challenge. Atletico Madrid committed €95m to sign Alvarez from Manchester City in 2024, and he still has six years left on his contract. Paris Saint-Germain, Arsenal, and Chelsea have also been credited with an interest. Alvarez himself has not quelled the transfer talk, telling L'Equipe: "I see what people say on social media and, in Spain, people speak a lot about me and Barcelona. For now, I am focused on Atletico and we will review the situation at the end of the season." With an estimated budget of approximately €130m for the summer, Barcelona has gone cold on a permanent €30m move for Marcus Rashford, instead exploring younger, cheaper alternatives such as Victor Munoz, Ez Abde, Jan Virgili, and Andreas Schjelderup. To fund these ambitious moves and free up wage space, the club may look to offload out-of-contract duo Robert Lewandowski and Andreas Christensen, and potentially Marc-Andre ter Stegen. Valuable and expendable assets like Ferran Torres, Marc Casado, and potentially Alejandro Balde could also be sold, with Torres already attracting interest from England and Italy. Barcelona's summer promises to be a delicate balancing act, as Flick and Deco attempt to build a Champions League-winning squad within strict financial parameters.
