Tickets for the World Cup final at MetLife Stadium on July 19 are being listed for an astonishing nearly $2.3 million each on FIFA’s official resale site, raising significant concerns about the exorbitant pricing for the sport’s showpiece event.

Four specific seats for the final were observed on the Resale/Exchange Marketplace with a price tag of $2,299,998.85 each.

These seats were located behind a goal in the lower deck, specifically in Block 124, Row 45, Seats 33-36. The listing highlights a concerning trend of escalating costs for fans hoping to witness the sport’s biggest match.

FIFA’s commission and market dynamics

The pricing on the resale platform also brings FIFA’s own financial model into focus. FIFA applies a 15% purchase fee from the buyer and a 15% resale fee from the seller on its Resale/Exchange Marketplace. If the four tickets listed at nearly $2.3 million each were to sell, FIFA stood to earn over €2.3 million in commission alone from the transactions.

While FIFA does not control the asking prices set by sellers on its resale platform, the organization defended its system. In a statement, FIFA asserted, “Fifa has established a ticket sales and secondary market model that reflects standard ticket market practices for major sporting and entertainment events across the host countries.”

The organization further added, “The applicable resale facilitation fees are aligned with industry standards across North American sports and entertainment sectors.

Fifa’s variable pricing ticketing approach aligns with industry trends across various sports and entertainment sectors, where price adaptations are made to optimise sales and attendance and ensure a fair market value for events.” FIFA states that it reinvests World Cup revenue among its 211 members to develop the sport.

Widespread high prices across the tournament

The nearly $2.3 million tickets are an extreme example, but high prices are prevalent across the tournament’s ticketing landscape. Other seats for the July 19 final were also listed for hundreds of thousands of pounds on the resale site. The lowest-priced tickets available for the final on the resale site were still substantial, at $10,923.85 (€9,323).

In comparison, new blocks of tickets released on FIFA’s direct ticketing site on Wednesday offered seats for the final at $10,990 (£8,153). Prices for earlier stages of the tournament also reflected a premium:

Tickets for England’s three group games were being sold for tens of thousands of pounds on the resale market.

Tickets for the July 14 semi-final in Arlington, Texas, were available directly from FIFA at $11,130 (€9,500).

For the July 15 semi-final in Atlanta, direct FIFA tickets were priced at $9,660 (€8,245) and $4,360 (€3,721).
