Real Madrid finds itself at a critical juncture, having exited the Champions League and trailing La Liga leaders Barcelona, currently sitting closer to third-place Villarreal. The club’s current manager, Alvaro Arbeloa, faces an increasingly uncertain future, prompting chairman Florentino Perez to actively seek a new boss for next season.
Arbeloa took the helm in January following Xabi Alonso’s departure. While Alonso left with an impressive 74% win ratio, Arbeloa’s tenure has seen a dip in form and significant setbacks. His statistics reveal a 64% win percentage, having lost more games than Alonso in five fewer league matches. A particularly damaging blow came just two days into his tenure with a shock Copa del Rey defeat to second-tier side Albacete.
With Arbeloa having one year left on his contract, the focus has shifted to who will lead the club next. Perez, known for his preference for “grand managers” capable of handling star egos rather than prioritizing a specific tactical identity, is reportedly driving the search. Previous appointments like Rafa Benitez, Julen Lopetegui, and Alonso, perceived as “organisers” by the club’s number two, Jose Angel Sanchez, often struggled without Perez’s full backing.
Among the high-profile names being considered, Jose Mourinho stands out. Currently managing Benfica in Portugal, Mourinho is under contract until 2027 but reportedly has clauses allowing him to leave. He is also said to be desperate for a return to the Santiago Bernabeu, where he previously managed Real Madrid from 2010 to 2013, securing a La Liga title, a Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup. However, as Guillem Balague reported for BBC Sport Columnist, Mourinho is considered an “ultimate wildcard” option, likely to be pursued by Perez only if other avenues prove unsuccessful.
Other prominent figures in contention for the coveted role include Mauricio Pochettino, Didier Deschamps, Massimiliano Allegri, and Jurgen Klopp.
- Mauricio Pochettino is seen as “extremely well placed” despite his commitment to the United States national team for the World Cup, largely due to his existing relationships within the club.
- Didier Deschamps, whose contract with France also runs until the World Cup, is admired for his calm authority and ability to manage big personalities, aligning with Perez’s preferences, though timing could be an issue.
- Massimiliano Allegri, the current AC Milan manager, is viewed in the “Ancelotti mould” and has been of interest to Perez previously. His appointment could even pave the way for Luka Modric, who moved to AC Milan last summer, to potentially return to Real Madrid.
- Jurgen Klopp is also mentioned, but sources indicate he has reservations, primarily due to his interventionist nature and demand for a specific playing style, which Real Madrid under Perez reportedly seeks to avoid.
