From Ferguson and beyond, Manchester United has seen a revolving door of managers, each trying to restore the club’s dominance. Some have lifted trophies, while others have struggled to make an impact. With varying degrees of success, these managers have all left their mark on the club’s history. Below is a ranking based on their average points per game, highlighting their performances and legacies at Old Trafford.

The current Manchester United manager has had a tough start, with the team struggling to find stability. Appointed in November 2024 after a promising tenure at Sporting CP, Amorim has yet to deliver consistent results. He has managed 14 games so far and faces an uphill battle to turn things around.
10. Ralf Rangnick – 1.45 Points per game

Brought in as interim manager in December 2021, Rangnick was tasked with implementing a tactical overhaul, but his tenure was largely disappointing. The squad failed to adapt to his pressing style, and results suffered. After 29 games, he stepped away in the summer of 2022 without leaving a lasting impact.
Appointed as Ferguson’s successor in 2013, Moyes never managed to assert control at the club. United quickly dropped out of the title race, and after 51 games, he was sacked before completing his first season. His tenure demonstrated just how difficult replacing Ferguson would be.
Giggs took over as caretaker manager for the final games of the 2013/14 season following Moyes’ dismissal. He managed 4 games, securing two wins, one draw, and one loss. While he didn’t receive the permanent job, he remains a club legend.
7. Erik ten Hag – 1.74 Points per game

Ten Hag arrived in 2022 with high expectations and won the Carabao Cup in his first season. However, a poor start to the 2024/25 campaign led to his dismissal in October 2024. Across 85 games, he showed glimpses of promise but ultimately failed to maintain success.
6. Louis van Gaal – 1.81 Points per game

The Dutch tactician won the FA Cup in 2016 but was sacked immediately afterward. His rigid, possession-based playing style was never widely embraced by the fans, despite delivering steady results. He managed 103 games during his time at the club.
5. Ole Gunnar Solskjær – 1.84 Points per game

Initially appointed as interim manager in 2018, Solskjær’s strong start earned him the permanent role. He led United to a second-place finish in the Premier League in 2021, but tactical shortcomings and declining performances led to his dismissal. In 168 games, he built a solid but ultimately inconsistent team.
Mourinho remains the most successful permanent manager of the post-Ferguson era. He won the Europa League, Carabao Cup, and Community Shield in 2017 but was dismissed in late 2018 after internal conflicts and declining results. Over 114 games, he delivered silverware but struggled to maintain harmony within the squad.
3. Sir Alex Ferguson – 2.16 Points per game

The greatest manager in Manchester United’s history, Ferguson led the club for 1,500 games over 26 years, winning 13 Premier League titles, two Champions Leagues, and countless other trophies. His ability to rebuild teams and maintain dominance set a standard that no successor has been able to match.
2. Michael Carrick – 2.33 Points per game

Carrick stepped in as interim manager after Solskjær was sacked in November 2021 and remained undefeated in his brief spell. He managed 3 games, securing two wins and one draw before leaving the role.
