Only a handful of teams across history have managed to accomplish this feat, dominating their domestic leagues while avoiding the pitfalls of a long and grueling campaign. Preston North End, 1888/89

The English top flight is the oldest professional football league in the world, and Preston North End were one of its 12 founding members in the inaugural 1888/89 season. The Lilywhites were by far the best team in the country at the time, winning the league title by a commanding 12-point margin over Aston Villa—without losing a single match. They won 18 and drew four of their 22 games, scoring 74 goals and conceding just 15. To cap off their historic campaign, they also won the FA Cup, becoming the first team to complete a league and cup double, earning the title of football’s first ‘Invincibles.’
Rangers dominated Scottish Division One with an unmatched feat—winning all 18 of their league matches, something never repeated in Scottish football history. Under the guidance of William Wilton, the team showcased total supremacy, scoring 79 goals and conceding just 18. Their flawless campaign cemented their place as one of Scotland’s earliest footballing powerhouses.
Athletic Bilbao achieved an unbeaten league season in just the second-ever La Liga campaign. Coached by the legendary Fred Pentland, they played 18 matches, winning 12 and drawing six to secure their first Spanish top-flight title. Known for their attacking football and homegrown talent, Bilbao’s unbeaten season laid the foundation for future domestic success.
Benfica, 1977/78

Under John Mortimore, Benfica produced a dominant season in Portugal’s Primeira Divisão, going unbeaten across 30 league matches. They secured the league title with a mix of attacking flair and defensive solidity, scoring 76 goals while conceding just 16. Despite their domestic dominance, their European campaign fell short, making their undefeated league run even more of a highlight.
AC Milan, 1991/92

Fabio Capello’s AC Milan side stormed through the 1991/92 Serie A season without a single defeat, playing 34 matches and securing the title with ease. Led by stars such as Marco van Basten and Franco Baresi, the Rossoneri combined tactical discipline with attacking brilliance. Their unbeaten run was part of a record-breaking 58-match undefeated streak in Serie A.

Across 34 matches, they won 27 and drew seven, scoring 106 goals and conceding just 28. Powered by young talents like Patrick Kluivert and Clarence Seedorf, Ajax capped off their incredible year by winning the UEFA Champions League.
Arsène Wenger’s Arsenal side became only the second English team to complete a top-flight season unbeaten, following in the footsteps of Preston North End. The ‘Invincibles’ won 26 and drew 12 of their 38 league matches, finishing 11 points clear of Chelsea. Thierry Henry’s brilliance, Patrick Vieira’s leadership, and a rock-solid defense made them one of the greatest Premier League teams ever.
Porto, 2010/11

André Villas-Boas led Porto to an unbeaten season in the Primeira Liga, winning 27 of their 30 matches. With stars like Radamel Falcao and Hulk, they dominated Portuguese football, scoring 73 goals and conceding just 16. Their league success was part of a historic treble-winning season, as they also claimed the Taça de Portugal and the UEFA Europa League.
Juventus, 2011/12
