AFCON final controversy deepens after shock reversal

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is facing growing scrutiny after a controversial decision overturned the result of this year’s Africa Cup of Nations final, triggering political backlash in Senegal and raising fresh concerns about governance in African football.

CAF president Patrice Motsepe has defended the organization’s judicial process, insisting its decisions are independent and will be respected as Senegal prepares a legal challenge.

Appeals ruling sparks backlash

CAF’s appeals board ruled this week that Senegal forfeited the Jan. 18 final after its players temporarily left the field during the match. The decision overturned Senegal’s 1-0 extra-time victory and instead awarded Morocco a 3-0 win.

According to CAF, the players left the pitch without the referee’s authorization during a disruption caused by protests in the stands.

Speaking in a video published by CAF, Motsepe acknowledged the controversy and pointed to differing conclusions reached by the governing body’s legal panels.

“The CAF disciplinary board took one decision. The CAF appeals board took a totally different position,” he said, adding that Senegal’s planned appeal was “very important.”
“We will adhere and respect the decision that’s taken at the highest level.”

Senegal calls for investigation

Senegal’s government has called for an international investigation into what it described as “suspected corruption” surrounding the ruling.

Officials also condemned the verdict as a “manifestly erroneous interpretation of the regulations, leading to a grossly illegal and deeply unjust decision,” signaling that the dispute has escalated beyond sport.

CAF defends its judicial process

Motsepe rejected allegations of bias, saying CAF’s disciplinary and appeals bodies are composed of legal experts nominated by its 54 member associations.

“If you look at the composition of those bodies, they reflect some of the most respected lawyers and judges on the continent,” he said. “These are people who have integrity and have a track record.”

He added that differing rulings between committees demonstrate their independence rather than political influence.

What happened in the final

The controversy stems from events during the final, when Senegal players briefly left the field for nearly 10 minutes as fans protested a penalty awarded to Morocco after a Senegal goal had been disallowed.

Play eventually resumed, Morocco missed the penalty, and Senegal went on to score the winning goal in extra time.

Initially, CAF’s disciplinary board fined both teams more than $1 million and issued suspensions but allowed the result to stand. The appeals board later reversed that outcome.

Next steps and broader concerns

Senegal’s football federation has said it will appeal the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Motsepe also addressed broader concerns about trust in African football, acknowledging that skepticism toward officiating and governance has been a long-standing issue.

“What happened in that final match undermines the good work that CAF has done over many years to ensure integrity, respect, and credibility,” he said.

He also dismissed suggestions that Morocco received favorable treatment, saying: “Not a single country in Africa will be treated in a manner that is more preferential, or more advantageous, or more favorable than any other country.”

The outcome of Senegal’s appeal could now play a key role in shaping confidence in CAF’s governance and decision-making.
