Alan Shearer’s Premier League record looks safe after Harry Kane signs new Bayern deal

The 2026 Ballon d’Or winner has tied himself to Munich until the summer of 2029, a decision that all but leaves Alan Shearer’s 260-goal Premier League mark out of reach.

Alan Shearer’s 260 Premier League goals have survived another challenger. Harry Kane has extended his Bayern Munich contract until 30 June 2029, tying himself to the German champions until a month before his 36th birthday and all but ruling out a late return to English football.

Kane left Tottenham Hotspur in August 2023 on 213 Premier League goals in 320 games, 47 short of Shearer’s tally. Shearer scored those 260 goals in 441 Premier League appearances for Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United. Barring a short-term move after his Bayern deal expires, Kane will not get another crack at it.

The Bayern announcement, made on Thursday, closes one of the longest-running storylines in German football. Kane joined in 2023 on a four-year deal and had been playing out its final season.

“I love the club, the fans and the city of Munich,” Kane said in the club statement. “We have a fantastic team and, in Vincent Kompany, a fantastic manager. My whole family is very happy here. I was keen to stay. I’m now looking forward to the future and I want to win many more titles with this great club.”

The numbers justify Bayern’s enthusiasm. Kane has reached 102 Bundesliga goals in 102 games, the fastest player to the milestone, and in the 2025/26 season he scored 61 goals in 51 appearances across all competitions. Last month in London he collected the 2026 Ballon d’Or, the first English winner of the award in 25 years.

‘Not at the moment’: Kane cools return talk

Just over a week before his new deal was announced, Kane was asked in London whether a Premier League return was on his mind.

“Not at the moment, not right now. I’m loving life in Munich,” he told reporters after collecting the Ballon d’Or at the London Palladium in late October, adding that his priorities were the Champions League with Bayern and a major trophy with England.

Herbert Hainer, the Bayern president, framed the stay in grander terms.

“What began as a major transfer has, over time, become a special chapter in FC Bayern’s history,” Hainer said in the club’s announcement. “Harry Kane lives up to every promise football has to offer, and he has secured his place in the hearts of the fans as one of the greatest figures in the sport of our time.”

England’s captain locked in through Euro 2028

For Thomas Tuchel, the extension removes one of the few genuine questions over his squad for the 2028 European Championship. Tuchel is contracted as England manager through 2028, having signed the extension in February 2026. He then guided the country to third place at the 2026 World Cup, England’s best men’s tournament finish since 1966. Kane, England’s record scorer with 91 goals in 125 caps, will be 34 when Euro 2028 kicks off and still under contract at Bayern through the following season.

Chris Sutton, the former England striker, told BBC Sport the age question was less interesting than the lack of alternatives.

“When you talk about 2028 or 2030, who are the English strikers coming through to challenge him?” Sutton said.
