Carlos Alcaraz’s October has been rewritten in less than 72 hours.
A Monday loss in Shanghai, a Houthi attack on Riyadh’s main airport, and a Thursday morning announcement out of Vienna have reshaped the Spaniard’s late-season plans. He is now set to open his Erste Bank Open on Tuesday, 27 October, dropped into a field that already contains Alexander Zverev, Daniil Medvedev, Alex de Minaur, Flavio Cobolli and Frances Tiafoe.
Vienna tournament director Herwig Straka confirmed the move on Thursday.
“Everything happened very quickly after that, and Carlos agreed to come to Vienna without much hesitation,” Straka said.

The Erste Bank Open, an ATP 500 event, runs from 24 October to 1 November. It is Alcaraz’s first appearance in Vienna since 2021, when he reached the semi-finals as a teenager before losing to Zverev.
Shanghai cost him more than one match
Alcaraz went out in the third round in Shanghai on Monday, beaten 7-5, 7-6(4) by Belgium’s Zizou Bergs. It was Bergs’s first career win over the Spaniard and the biggest result on his record.
“I didn’t play the way that I wanted to play. A lot of mistakes. I didn’t find a good position on the return,” Alcaraz told reporters.
“I’m really disappointed with today’s match because I didn’t find the solution. I just made a lot of unforced errors.”

The defeat also decided the race for year-end No. 1. The same day, Zverev clinched the ATP’s top 2026 ranking, confirmed as the first German and the oldest first-time year-end No. 1 at 29. Jannik Sinner, who has been sidelined since 12 July with a knee injury, still holds the current world No. 1 position; Alcaraz has slipped to No. 3.
Riyadh pushed to December after airport attack
The Six Kings Slam, scheduled for 21-24 October in Riyadh, was moved to 27-30 December after recent missile attacks on Saudi airports that have killed at least 20 people. The exhibition’s £1.2m appearance fee per player and £3.5m winner’s bonus remain, with Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic, Zverev, Taylor Fritz, Alex de Minaur and Learner Tien still on the invite list.
The postponement opened a near three-week gap in Alcaraz’s calendar before the Paris Masters.
After Vienna, the Spaniard is scheduled to play the Paris Masters from 2 November, followed by the ATP Finals in Turin and the Davis Cup Finals in Bologna. The Six Kings Slam in Riyadh now closes his year on 27-30 December.
