For most of Wednesday night the away end at Anfield sang Estevao Willian’s name. Xabi Alonso made three substitutions when the tie turned, and the 19-year-old Brazilian was not one of them.
Chelsea went out of the Carabao Cup at the fourth-round stage, beaten 6-5 on penalties by Liverpool after a 1-1 draw. On came Valentin Barco, Marco Palestra and Emmanuel Emegha. Estevao, in his second season at Stamford Bridge and still without a Premier League start, stayed in his tracksuit.
Alonso addressed the gap between the hype and the minutes afterwards.
“I understand his situation and that he could be happier for sure,” the Spaniard told reporters at his post-match press conference.

He pointed to the physical demands of English football and said Estevao was still working through a recovery process after a previous injury.
“Trust me, I’m sure the season is going to be long and Este is going to play his role,” he said.
PSG lining up a January rescue
Paris Saint-Germain are increasingly confident of agreeing a January loan for Chelsea’s teenage attacker, with Luis Enrique driving the push after a long-term knee injury to Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.
Chelsea’s answer is said to be conditional. According to TEAMtalk, the club would only consider a straight six-month loan with no option or obligation to buy, insist PSG cover Estevao’s entire wage during the spell, and want a financial penalty clause tied to a minimum number of minutes on the pitch.

A €34m signing from Palmeiras
Estevao arrived last year as one of the most anticipated teenage signings in Europe, joining from Palmeiras in July 2025 for a guaranteed fee reported at €34m, with add-ons that could lift the overall value to around €57m. His long-term deal keeps him under contract until 2033.
Alonso, appointed on a four-year contract that began on 1 July 2026, inherited that development project when he replaced Liam Rosenior over the summer. His first autumn in charge has been uneven, with Chelsea leaving Anfield having won just two of their last six games across all competitions.
Chelsea’s conditions for any PSG loan are already drawn up.
