Alonso safety fears grow after China GP as Aston Martin issues exposed

According to GiveMeSport, Aston Martin’s difficult start to the 2026 Formula 1 season continued in Shanghai, where both Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll retired from the Chinese Grand Prix after another underwhelming weekend for the team. Hopes of improvement following a disappointing opener in Australia failed to materialise, with neither driver able to compete near the points across both the sprint and the main race.

Race setbacks deepen Aston Martin concerns

Aston Martin entered the China weekend under pressure after a poor showing in Melbourne, and those concerns only grew as events unfolded. Both drivers finished near the back in the sprint race, highlighting a lack of pace, and the situation worsened during Sunday’s Grand Prix.

Lance Stroll was forced to retire early due to what the team described as a suspected battery issue, while Fernando Alonso continued for longer before withdrawing with 21 laps remaining. His retirement, however, was not simply strategic, it was driven by significant physical discomfort caused by the car.

Onboard footage raises safety questions

According to GiveMeSport, footage shared widely on X showed Alonso briefly removing his hands from the steering wheel on a straight as he battled intense vibrations. The clip quickly spread among fans and analysts, prompting concern about whether the car should have remained on track under such conditions.

The incident has triggered wider discussion about safety standards in Formula 1, particularly regarding how extreme mechanical issues can directly affect driver control and physical wellbeing during a race.

Alonso details physical impact of vibrations

Speaking after the race, Alonso described the severity of the issue, as reported by Crash.net. He explained that the vibrations became increasingly difficult to manage and had a noticeable physical effect over time.

“I probably wouldn’t have been able to finish the race anyway. Vibration level was very high today. From lap 20 to 35, I was struggling a little bit to feel my hands and my feet.”

He also pointed out that the team’s position in the race played a role in the decision to retire.

“We were one lap behind, we were last, and there was probably no point to keep going.”

Technical limitations and lack of preparation time

Alonso added that the team had attempted to reduce the issue by lowering engine revolutions, but this approach was not viable in race conditions where performance demands fluctuate.

“It was worse today than any other session during the weekend, for whatever reason,” he said, highlighting the unpredictable nature of the problem.

He further noted that the short gap between races limited Aston Martin’s ability to properly investigate the root cause. With more time available before the next round in Japan, the team is expected to focus on detailed analysis in collaboration with Honda.

“Now, we have two weeks, until Japan. We need to spend more time on the dyno, we need to give Honda more time to understand the vibrations and where they come from.”

Pressure builds ahead of Japan

With two consecutive races ending in retirement for both drivers, Aston Martin faces growing pressure to resolve its reliability and performance issues. Beyond competitiveness, the situation has now taken on a safety dimension, as the severity of the vibrations raises concerns about driver control and long term physical strain.

The upcoming race in Japan will be a critical moment for the team, not only to improve results but also to demonstrate that the underlying technical problems have been properly addressed.
