Mohamed Belloumi turned Chelsea’s afternoon at Stamford Bridge on its head in six first-half minutes.

The 24-year-old Algerian winger struck twice between the 28th and 34th minute on Saturday to convert a 1-0 Chelsea lead into a 2-1 lead for Hull City, and only João Pedro’s 66th-minute equaliser stopped Sergej Jakirović’s promoted side from taking all three points back to East Yorkshire.

Morgan Rogers had put Chelsea ahead in the 7th minute after the hosts broke from a Hull corner. Belloumi’s response came just after the half-hour, when a Ryan Giles cross that Jorrel Hato failed to deal with fell for the winger to lash home a half-volley. Six minutes later he was in again, slotting past Emiliano Martínez after Semi Ajayi’s header had rattled the crossbar.

Chelsea needed until the 66th minute to level, João Pedro sweeping in a left-footed finish from Cole Palmer’s low cross. Mohamed-Ali Cho then had a late chance for Hull in the 87th minute that Martínez turned away, and both sides pushed for a fifth goal that never came.

“I hope one day you say it was boring”

Alonso, in his first campaign at Chelsea after signing a four-year deal in May, was frank about the pattern.

“It’s all maybe entertaining, but I hope that one day you say it was a boring game and we win,” the Spaniard told reporters after the final whistle.

Chelsea have conceded in every Premier League match this season, and Saturday was their second league game in a row without a win, following a 2-1 defeat at Arsenal on 6 September.

The son of a 1982 World Cup scorer

Hull left London on eight points from four Premier League matches, still unbeaten in the top flight since their return from the Championship. Jakirović, who signed a two-year contract extension with the club on 4 September, called it “a huge result” in comments carried by Yahoo Sports.

Belloumi’s name carries weight in Algerian football. He is the son of Lakhdar Belloumi, who scored against West Germany at the 1982 World Cup and is regarded as one of the greatest players in the country’s history. The son joined Hull from Portuguese club Farense in 2024.
