Two different stories about who manages Manchester United are running at the same time, from opposite sides of Europe.
Italian journalist Enzo Bucchioni wrote in his TuttoMercatoWeb column that “the former Juventus manager is reaching an agreement with Manchester United, who have had a poor start to the Premier League season,” as Football365 reported on Monday.
Separately, Calciomercato.it said United are “seriously considering” sacking Carrick and that negotiations with Conte “could begin at the start of this week,” according to Sport Witness, which also wrote that United made initial contact to assess Conte’s availability on September 23.
Both Italian outlets repeat the same line: Antonio Conte, 57, would “gladly accept” the chance to replace Carrick. He has been without a club since Napoli officially terminated his contract on June 4, a season after he had taken the Serie A title in his first year in charge.

INEOS prefers to wait
The UK coverage reads almost in reverse. GiveMeSport reports that INEOS have decided not to sack Carrick and continue to back the 45-year-old, who was promoted from interim to permanent manager on May 22 after guiding United back into the Champions League.
Football365 cautioned that the Italian stories “need to be taken with a pinch of salt” and that Manchester United are “not yet planning to sack Carrick.”
United have taken six points from their first six Premier League games, matching their lowest tally at this stage of a season since 1986, and sit 12th in the table.
Six points, one win, Tottenham draw
The latest flashpoint came on Saturday. Bryan Mbeumo put United ahead against Tottenham in the 73rd minute, and Rodrigo Bentancur was sent off five minutes later, but Dominic Solanke equalized for the visitors in stoppage time.

Carrick spoke after the match.
“Obviously, it hurts, you know, it hurts a lot. It’s not nice to go through, but sometimes you have to go through it.”
Carrick’s next test is Tuesday’s Champions League trip to Atlético Madrid, followed by a visit to Leeds United on October 18.
