Two corner kicks in the final seven minutes at the Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday showed exactly why the Premier League’s two biggest spenders spent the summer circling.

Arda Güler, on from the bench in the 59th minute, swung in a corner that Endrick converted in the 85th to drag Real Madrid level at 3-3, then whipped in another that Antonio Rüdiger headed home in the 90th minute as the visitors completed a 4-3 Champions League comeback in Rome.

That evening made the news out of Madrid harder to swallow for the Premier League. According to Spanish daily AS, Real Madrid and Güler have agreed a two-year extension that keeps the 21-year-old at the club until 2031, up from his previous deal to 2029.

The Premier League door closes

Both Arsenal and Manchester City registered interest during the summer transfer window. The planned extension, which also carries a salary rise, effectively ends that pursuit.

Transfermarkt has lifted his market value from €90m to €100m on the back of the reports.

A regular under Mourinho

The deal has not yet been officially confirmed by Real Madrid, but it has the clear backing of the two figures who matter most at the Bernabéu: president Florentino Pérez, long a public champion of Güler, and José Mourinho, who returned as head coach this summer on a three-year contract and has leant on the Turkish playmaker in his first months in charge.

Last season Güler made 40 starts and contributed six goals and 14 assists. He has already been involved in four goals across seven matches of the current campaign and was named in Real Madrid’s five-player team of the month for September.

Real Madrid have not set a date for a formal announcement of the extension.
